CCP Mouthpiece Supports Shanwei Secretary’s Wukan Protest
Speech; Speech Criticized by Civilians

In December 2011, CCP secretary of Shanwei City in
Guandong Province, Zheng Yanxiong,
made astounding comments regarding the Wukan protests,
such as “foreign media can only be trusted when pigs can fly.”
On January 4th, The CCP mouthpiece People’s Daily Online’s
website posted an article titled “Analysis of media responses to Wukan protests,”
which said that “Zheng Yanxiong’s address
had won high opinions.”
Many Chinese civilians criticized that in their article,
the People’s Daily Online was “lying with a straight face.”

On December 19th, 2011, CCP secretary of Shanwei city,
Zheng Yanxiong, addressed the protests in Wukan village.
In his speech, Zheng condemned villagers for appealing to
foreign media.
He also revealed that requiring help from armed police
cost a large amount.
Zheng complained that as an official, his life became harder
because his power was lessened while civilians became smarter.

(CCP secretary of Shanwei city, Zheng Yanxiong):”Foreign
media can only be trusted when pigs can fly.
The civilians become smarter and require more day by day.

How can you count on the several awful media abroad
when there is such a responsible local government?”

On January 4th, People’s Daily Online wrote an article titled,
“Analysis of media responses to Wukan protests,” which said,
“The full recorded video of Zheng Yanxiong’s speech about
protests in Wukan which was posted online has won high regards from media.”

(Chinese lawyer Li Tiantian):”Even if someone
really applauded Zheng’s speech, it is probably just irony.
It is total nonsense for him to say something like, ‘foreign
media can only be trusted when pigs can fly.’
Everyone knows that it is rather Chinese media which
cannot be trusted.”

Internet writer Jing Chu commented that all these years
People’s Daily has been deceiving Chinese people by its stereotypical, full of hot air writing;
whatever suffering Chinese people have to bear, it always
reports how good the domestic situation is and how badly foreign people live.

Jing Chu: ”People’s Daily and its website always lie and can
never be trusted.
The official media, such as People’s Daily and CCTV just regard themselves as watchdogs of the party, and their
position is,
‘it is a dog raised by the Party, guarding the Party’s gate;

it would bite anyone the Party wants it to bite,
and bite however many times the Party wants it to.’”

On the other hand, many Chinese officials commented privately
that Zheng’s speech revealed real difficulties, causing local officials to worry.

However, Wukan villagers said Zheng’s words have brought
great shame to them.

(Wukan villager):”It’s such a great shame (his words).

He said “civilians become smarter,” which is equivalent to
saying that we used to be so stupid and so easy to deceive.
Now we are not that stupid anymore so it is more difficult
for him to deceive us. Isn’t that what he meant?”

Another villager told Apple Daily that, everyone there is
blaming Zheng’s absurdness and his stupid words.
The villages also pegged him as an uneducated person who
got to his current position by bribery.

(Li Tiantian): ”Zheng also said that there would be no difference
even if someone else were in his position.
This could kind of be true in the sense that nowadays most
Chinese officials show similar terrible morals.”

According to Apple Daily’s report, though it has been
more than three months since the Wukan protests broke out in September 2011,
48-year-old Zheng Yanxiong has not been
held accountable yet.
This time, People’s Daily Online even wrote an article
supporting him, which may boost his political life.

The report mentioned that Zheng’s latest public showing was
on December 31st, 2011,
when he accompanied vice governor of Guangdong,
Lin Musheng, to an investigation in Shenshan Cooperative District.
