CCTV New Year Gala Is Nothing but Politics

CCTV Chinese New Year Gala Executive Director Lu Yitao
revealed that the New Year’s Gala has been promoted from a
TV executive project to a national project, comparable to the
2008 Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony.
Some scholars believe CCTV’s New Year Gala represents a
CCP political ritual and changes the value of New Year’s Eve.
The show is criticized not for its quality,
but that it should not continue to exist.

The Chinese New Year Gala, CCTV’s executive project,
has recently been promoted to a national project, comparable
to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony.

According to its Executive Director Lu Yitao,
this shows the importance of the program to the state.

Sydney Times Chinese editor in chief Yang Hengjun indicates
that the CCTV New Year Gala, supposedly an entertainment,
is totally politicized and infected with patriotic propaganda
and brainwashing material.
The Chinese New Year’s Eve is a time for family, not politics.
This program absolutely should not have existed.

Yang Hengjun: “Why has this CCTV program been criticized
so much for all these years?
In fact it is not the quality of the program, but that the program
should not have existed.
A TV show is transformed into a national project?
Look at the fact that for 1.4 billion Chinese people,
the daily news is about what a TV show means to the country.
It makes you feel retarded."

Yang Hengjun says the CCTV Chinese New Year Gala is full
of the ideology of the Communist regime.

Yang Hengjun: “Nearly one-third of the entire program is about
military police.
Even characters in uniforms appear on stage all the time.
This is not what would be seen in worldwide TV programs.
How would so many police and soldiers appear in
programs so often in a non-police state or non-militarist country?"

Poet and cultural critic Ye Kuangzheng says the news is not
about news, and the show is not about entertainment.
The CCTV news is a daily political ritual,
and the CCTV New Year Gala is an annual political ritual.

Ye Kuangzheng,: “It has been treated
like a national project, rather than an entertainment for the public.
The CCTV program has been shaped and molded by
state ideology to convey the authority of the state and the
government.
It has been a propaganda tool to spread the CCP political myth."

Ye Kuangzheng explains that traditional Chinese New Year’s
Eve is when people would worship time, nature,
the ancestors and life, with rituals honoring gods and
ancestors and celebrations with fireworks, staying up all night
and singing folk music.

Ye Kuangzheng: “Through celebrating the New Year’s Eve,
people redeem themselves and fulfill the blessing of life.
The CCTV show has occupied this sacred moment and
completely changed the value of the Eve with the concept of
the state, and become propaganda for the ideology and
authority of the state."

Chinese media reported that general director of the 2014 CCTV
Chinese New Year Gala, Feng Xiaogang, appointed by the top
officials, has gradually realized the show is not private or
public, but rather a state program.
Feng Xiaogang swears that he’ll never do it again in this life time.

Since becoming the general director of the program, Feng said,
“My team thinks that I have mental issues."

To show his directorial qualities, Feng Xiaogang invited
the Father of Chinese Rock, Cui Jian, to the show.
Cui Jian, banned by the Communist regime, insisted
on singing his hit, “Nothing to my name",
symbolic of the 1989 student movement,
and rejected the invitation.

Ye Kuangzheng: “When Feng Xiaogang was appointed
director, I said that, even if Chaplin were to direct this
show, he would not have been able to make any difference.
The political framework would restrict Chaplin from revealing
the bitter sufferings of his era through comedy.
Chaplin’s style won’t appear in the show."

Ye Kuangzheng had written earlier that many performances
in China today are means to control, and demonstrate the
political agenda of the state.

The ceremonies have become the best tools to convey political
myths.
The emotion conveyed through the programs is manipulated
to influence the concept and perception of reality and
the legitimacy of the state.
