11-Years-Old’ Exhibition Banned

Shenyang-based peddler, Xia Junfeng has killed 2 policemen.
His poor family conditions and the fate of his family have
been reported by the media, attracting public concern
after his death sentence was released.
A painting exhibition was hosted in Wuhan City and Shanghai
for his 11-year-old son Xia Jianqiang, who loves to draw.
However, the exhibition held in Shanghai
was soon forced out by authorities.

A painting exhibition called “Xia Jianqiang’s Drawings”
was hosted in Wuhan from August 20 to 23.
Little Jianqiang remained silent throughout the opening day
of his exhibition.

People who came to admire his artworks
only expressed their sadness when seeing the paintings.
Because of his father, little Jianqiang and his artworks have
come on stage.

The 11-year-old is a well-known child artist
at a local Children Society in Shenyang.
His mother Zhang Jing said that
he started studying painting at the age of 6,
and had won first prizes two years in a row
at the three Northeast provinces in China.
His teacher began recommending
he take part in competitions held in Beijing.
His unemployed parents then decided to peddle on the street
to earn enough money for him, disregarding all difficulties.
However, a tragedy took place in July,
before the child’s summer vacation.

His father, Xia Junfeng, was beaten by a dozen of policemen
for peddling. He defended himself with a fruit knife.
However, he accidentally killed two of the policemen.
Xia’s name became known instantly by all.

His lawyer, Teng Biao, stressed Xia Junfeng was
in a justifiable defense when confronting the police brutality,
and his reaction occurred after the illegal violence.

Xia Junfeng is nevertheless sentenced to death.

Now, Xia Jianqiang can never expect
his father to return home.
According to his mother, he is not aware of what
has happened to his father, but has become quiet since.
He spends hours at a time
sitting in front of his painting board, drawing.
His drawings appear uplifting: an angel-like child
flying into his mother’s arms; flowers and greenery.
There are no police and peddlers in his works.

Some netizens depicted the story of his father in cartoons
and appealed for “public concern” on the case,
urging people to provide assistance to the family.

Donations to the mother and son then started coming in.

After his art exhibition in Wuhan,
his Shanghai exhibition was scheduled on August 27- 29.
However, it was banned by the authorities, who said that
there were complaints from people calling it “disturbing.”
The exhibition was then forced to move
to an inconspicuous place for one day only.
Netizen “Awaiting for Afternoon Tea” said in a microblog:
“Due to unforeseen reasons, the exhibition was cancelled.
Please do not ask for the specific reasons.”

Another netizen commented: “They want to kill the father,
and now they are going to kill the child’s voice too.”
Netizen “Zi’s zizi” added: “It is puzzling how the authorities
can fear a little child.”

Xia Junfeng’s story has not come to an end.
His case is still being reviewed by the Supreme Court.

Lawyer Teng Biao wrote for Xia’s second trial:
“The city monitor system has already ruined two families,
do we just allow the same to happen to a third one
(i.e. Xia’s family)?”

He thinks that the two dead policemen are victims
of the city monitor system as much as the father is.
Teng Biao also stated that if people could be put to death
for justifiable self defense, then society is facing fatal danger,
which comes worse than sins and evils, as existing social
rules and norms can be ruined by disorder and imbrutement.
