May 4th Movement Anniversary
This year is May 4th Movement’s 92nd anniversary.
To emphasize its founding 90 years ago,
Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) downplays
the May 4th Movement anniversary celebrations.
At the movement’s birthplace – Peking University –
most students dare not express political concerns,
in fear of offending the CCP authorities.
Peking University (PU) used to be one of the most
active Chinese universities in terms of ideology
and thinking. However, the May 4th Movement
is being downplayed. It is only mentioned
on the poster of a concert. The statue
of Principal Cai Yuanpei, spiritual leader
of May 4th Movement, is being neglected.
A student at Peking University said, on campus,
there are “ideology police" monitoring the students.
So, many students are restrained ideologically.
Economics’ Prof. Xia Yeliang of PU said,
that current students abide by their parents’ advice:
“don’t touch the (authorities’) landmines."
Unlike the students of Tiananmen Movement,
they lack passion to put philosophy into action.
Political analyst Zhang Jian: “In China’s society,
Falun Gong practitioners, house church members
and dissidents have done justice to the nation,
freedom and democracy in defending human rights,
including their own ideals and faiths.
If you want to pursue truth, goodness and beauty,
you will encounter resistance in China.”
On May 4th 1919, a student-led patriotic movement
took place in Beijing. The term “May 4th Movement"
refers to the chaotic China’s 1915-1926 years.
Chinese intellectuals and students tried to build
a strong nation by using democracy and science.
However, the CCP defines May 4th Movement
as the spread of Marxism in China.
Prof. Xia said that authorities don’t recognize
universal values of democracy, science and freedom.
Its propaganda is not consistent with the history.
Prof. He Weifang at Peking University Law School
believes that May 4th was “New Culture Movement"
of vernacular literature and Western cultures.
It is over-interpreted as a political movement.
Zhang: “In a society woven by lies,
if you want to know the truth, you offend authorities.
Like dissident artist Ai Weiwei said, in autocracies,
if you want to understand the state,
you embark on the path of becoming a criminal.”
May 4th Movement is misinterpreted as political
by the authorities. Its original spirit is also wiped out.
On its 92nd anniversary, the inspiring scenes
and radiant people have gradually slipped away
in the hearts of today’s Chinese youth.
