Radio France Internationale Reports Bo Xilai Trial Expected Next Week

Former Chongqing Party Secretary Bo Xilai’s case
is being extensively observed, overseas and domestically.
Due to the delays in the trial,
rumors have spread widely.

On August 13, Radio France Internationale (RFI) cited
reliable sources, stating Bo’s trial is likely to be next week.
This should be around August 23
in Jinan, Shandong Province.

Earlier, an overseas Chinese website reported,
the reason for postponing Bo’s trial.
It was that Bo firmly rejected his wife,
Gu Kailai, from testifying in court.
RFI confirmed from sources that this
was one of the reasons to delay the trial.

The report said that the family of British
businessman Neil Heywood, who was murdered
by Gu Kailai, broke their silence on August 12.
They asked for 30 million Yuan ($5 million) as
compensation. That is one of the changes to Bo’s case.

The report cited the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

According to Heywood’s close friend, he was
in possession of documents detailing some
of the Bo family’s financial affairs overseas.
This implied Heywood’s family
had an advantage in negotiations.
The Chinese regime is likely to have been
involved in negotiations with the Heywood family.

WSJ reported that the Heywood’s requesting compensation
threatens to complicate the Chinese Communist Party’s
(CCP) leadership efforts to conclude the Bo Xilai scandal.

Anhui Police Detain Human Right Activists

Recently, several netizens and activists who participated
and supported education rights in April were detained.
They were supporting Zhang Anni, daughter
of democratic Zhang Lin in Anhui Province.
Analysts said that this is revenge on the part
of Anhui police towards human rights activists.

Voice Of America (VOA) reported that, on
August 10, Li Huapin (web user name Norwegian
Forest), was detained by Hefei police in Hunan.
Li is the founder of a campaign to
support Anni’s educational rights.
On August 12, Hefei activist Cai Baowen went to
a detention center to give money and food for Li.
The next day, Hefei national security personnel
heavily knocked on the door of a hotel where Cai lives.
They intended to take Cai away.

In addition, last week, Bangbu police
in Anhui also summoned Zhang Lin.
They also summoned Zhang’s daughter’s legal
representative, activist Tian Li, and their assistant.
The police collected Zhang Lin’s
“materials”, so as to sentence her.

Zhang Lin was also detained on July 19, for
alleged “suspicion of disturbing public order”.

Overseas website Chinese Jasmine Revolution
(CJR) reported that at two o’clock on August 13,
more than 50 police went to Tiejiang village.
They broke into houses and arrested people. The villagers
were angry, so several hundred surrounded the police.
The police quickly left, and three police cars
were abandoned. Several villagers were arrested.

to protest in front of the county government.
Villagers and police clashed again, and
many people were reportedly injured.
