Gary Locke Departs, Communist Regime Gets Bitter

On March 1, U.S. Embassy Weibo showed a photo of former
Ambassador Gary Locke and his wife Mona at Beijing airport.
This signaled the end of Mr. Locke’s two and a half years as
the U.S. ambassador to China.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece media
issued an editorial of racist attack and abuse, rather than
praise and regret.

The state media report angered mainland netizens.

Along with the international coverage, Mr. Locke has once
again become the focus of the media.

The state-run China News Service editorial on Feb 27, titled
“Farewell, Gary Locke” slammed Mr. Locke as “yellow
skined and white hearted,” “black hair and yellow skin,” and
“nauseating with a dark core” and “bananas”.

The evil-spirited editorial even brought Mr. Locke’s
ancestors into the criticism.

The commentary stated, “When Gary Locke arrived, the sky in
Beijing became hazy. When he left, the sky suddenly became
blue. Mr. Ambassador waved away the smog in our minds.”

This editorial immediately generated public shock and anger.

Internet commentator Yao Bo stated, “This China News
article is the most shameless and foul article I’ve ever seen ….
Regarding Gary Locke, everything aside, without him, we
would still have not known anything about the PM2.5.”

AP also reported in its article, “Chinese media outlet uses
racial slur at US envoy”.
That a major Chinese government news service used a racist
slur to describe the departing American ambassador….drew
widespread public condemnation in China.”

Lan Su, commentator: “The slandering against Gary Locke
was because of the charisma Gary Locke has with both the
Chinese and the western orthodox.

The Communist officials have been
embarrassed and humiliated.”

Commentator Lan Su explained that Gary Locke demonstrated
the free, democratic and tolerant culture of the West, and the
traditionally gentle and Confucian culture of China.

Gary Locke has won people’s hearts by carrying his own bag
flying economy class and not staying in a 5-star luxury hotel.

During his office, Gary Locke also handled major incidents:
Former vice mayor of Chongqing Public Security Bureau
Wang Lijun defecting to the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, and
blind activist Chen Guangcheng seeking refuge in the U.S.
Embassy in Beijing.

Chinese site Caixin.com commented: “In dealing with
emergencies, Gary Locke should score high.”

In April and June last year, Gary Locke also visited
politically sensitive areas such as Xinjiang and Tibet.

Ye Kuangzheng, poet and cultural critic: “Gary Locke’s many
behaviors are in contrast to the Communist officials.
He is more of a people person, with a simple, frugal lifestyle.

He also represents the much expected
American style of civilization.”

Hong Kong’s Commercial Daily deputy editor Zhou Gang in
his “Good bye, Gary Locke” article wrote: “Chinese suddenly
realized: Gary Locke represents what the U.S. officials are like.

The Communist bureaucrats also suddenly learned: Officials
do not have the privilege, they are the public servants.”

Zhou Gang believes that Gary Locke’s words and conducts are
a quiet but powerful whip to the Communist officials.

Poet and cultural critic Ye Kuangzheng indicated those who
slander Gary Locke are a handful of people, t extreme leftists.

In fact, Gary Locke has been repeatedly criticized by the
Communist state media:
His carrying a backpack in the economy
class was said to embezzle travel funds.
His taking the economy class was ridiculed by CCTV as
the United States owes China money.
Global Times warned Gary Locke to behave as an ambassador,
not to show off by his queuing up to buy coffee with coupons.
Beijing Daily demanded Gary Locke reveal his personal assets.
Guangming Daily warned to watch out for neo-colonialism.

Facing the abuse and insults from the Communist media,
according to WSJ, Gary Locke said: “I’m proud of my Chinese
heritage. I’m proud of the great contributions China has made
to world civilization over thousands of years.
But I’m thoroughly American, and proud of the great values
that America has brought to the entire world.”
