Trumpeter Scholar: Democracy Is Local-Level Knowledge

Recently, the scholars, acting as trumpeters of the
Chinese Communist Party (CCP), have become very active.
They have eulogized the CCP’s dictatorship regime.

One of them has advocated the CCP’s faith as
“the truth of the universe”.
Another has negated democracy, saying that
Western democracy should be downgraded,
that knowledge at a local level is superior
to universal knowledge.
This remark was found offensive by the public,
and was considered absurd.

On May 28, a CCP mouthpiece, the Guangming Daily,
published an article authored by Su Changhe.
Su is vice president of the International Relations School,
Fudan University.
The article attacked the Western notion of democracy.

It said,"Democratic knowledge has been
advocated by a few Western countries.
Now it is necessary to downgrade it in favor of
local-level knowledge, as against universal knowledge."

Su’s advocacy has spread over the internet,
and has met with massive criticism.
Netizens have accused him of
“defending the vested interest group".

(President, Democracy Academy of China) Tang Baiqiao:
““This is sheer fallacy. What’s ‘local-level knowledge’?
Knowledge is knowledge, it is not defined
in terms of local or global.
He may refer to value, a regional value or a global one.
His argument has faulty wording."

Tang Baiqiao says that so far, there are said to be
over 140 democratic countries in the world today.

Tang Baiqiao:"Among nearly 200 countries in the world,
four-fifths have achieved democracy.
This fact itself proves that democracy is a universal value."

In recent years, the CCP trumpeter scholars have
produced some astonishing remarks.

On May 7, Qi Biao, an official in charge of the CCP’s history
research, quoted Xi Jinping in his article in the Guangming Daily.
Xi said,"Mao Zedong cannot be negated,
because that will lead to great chaos in China."

On May 13, the web version of the People’s Daily
printed an article, authored by Li Shenming,
vice president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Li argued that,"It is a fake notion that over 30 million people
were starved to death in the Great Leap Forward period."
“No rightist was executed during the Anti-rightist Movement."

On May 17, Liu Xiaofeng, professor at the
People’s University of China(PUC), eulogized the CCP.
“Mao Zedong is the founding father of China, and
the Cultural Revolution is a democracy of the people."

On May 21, many official media reprinted an article
authored by Yang Xiaoqing, another PUC professor.
Yang wrote that “Constitutionalism isn’t fit for
socialist countries."

On May 22, the Global Times published an article,
“Constitutionalism is against China’s Constitution."
The same day, Sun Linping, deputy chief editor of
the Liberation Army Daily, exclaimed in his article that:
“The creed of our faith is the truth of the universe."

Outside critics say that recent ravings of
China’s leftists show intense CCP infighting.
But critic Lan Shu views it differently.

Lan Shu:"I don’t think the CCP’s left-wing and
right-wing factions are fighting over the issue.
This is because both forces lack the courage to
break free from the CCP."

Lan Shu indicates that the CCP has openly announced
a “dream of Constitutionalism".
Yet this dream is only “with Chinese characteristics", which
differs greatly from the constitution of democratic countries.

Lan Shu: “It is a Constitutionalist dream under
control or leadership of the CCP.
At bottom, the political system remains unchanged."

Yao Jianfu, a member of ex CCP leader Zhao Ziyang’s
think tank, affirmed to NTD that
these CCP trumpeter scholars have acted
to accommodate the CCP’s wishes.

Yao Jianfu:"I think they’re promoting the main idea of
the CCP central committee’s policy documents.
It required"Seven Taboos", one of them is——
Don’t mention about universal values."

In early May, the CCP central authorities issued
a ban of “Seven Taboos"in higher education.
It banned teachers from mention of the following to
college students:
universal values, press freedom, civil society,
rights of citizens,
the CCP’s historical mistakes,
the privileged elite, and judicial independence.
