London 2012 Olympic Games is Hot Topic in China

The 17-day London 2012 Olympic Games has concluded.

The “Socialympics” has aroused worldwide attention
from netizens after its opening ceremony.
Chinese micro-blogs have been flooded
with comments about every aspect of the Games.
Hot topics on the internet in China
covered all aspects of the Games.
Lively discussions were also triggered on the Chinese media.

In the London 2012 Olympic Games, China finished
second overall, winning 38 gold medals out of a total of 87.
State media website ‘people.com.cn’ released an article
stating that the “positive” or “negative” experiences
of Chinese Olympians in London were no different to those
experienced during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The article said that weightlifter Zhou Jun’s failure,
and the silver medal winners’ repeated apologies,
were a reflection of severe competition for gold medals.

It said the heaviest blow to hit the Chinese people
was Liu Xiang’s injury, forcing him to exit the Games.

Canada-based basketball coach Ju Bin said that if countries
acted like China,
spending so much taxpayers’ money on
only a few athletes, it would be a terrifying scenario.

Ju Bin: “If it is described in terms of grabbing gold medals,

I believe hundreds or thousands of talented people
like Liu Xiang could surely be found overseas.
Only one Liu Xiang can be found out
of tens of thousands of Chinese.
While in the U.S., you can pick
several out from one hundred people.
But what is the significance of just winning gold medals?
That has lost the spirit and value of sports competition."

A wide spectrum of Olympic Games issues have been
intensely discussed among Chinese netizens.
This included comments on the opening ceremony.

It also included the doubts raised about Chinese swimmers,
the expulsion of the Chinese badminton players,
and Liu Xiang’s quitting the Games due to injury.

China’s State sports system was also a topic, including
comparing the elation of new gold medal winners,
with retired champions’ living in poverty.

Zhu Xinxin, a former editor at Hebei People’s Radio Station,
commented on China’s sports system.
Zhu described it resembling forcing the coming of spring
‘qq.com’ reviewed that gold medals were
consecutively won by Chinese Olympic athletes.
However, an old controversial topic is still alive, in that
the Chinese nationals’ physique is below gold-medal level.
A term was even coined: “New sick men of East Asia".

The article on ‘people.com.cn’ cited official data.

It stated that in the past 10 years, the number
of China’s Olympic gold medals has risen significantly.
In comparison, the national physique has been declining.

The article compared the ratio of junior school students,
In three counties, participating in extra-curricular sports.
China was 8%, Japan was 65.4%, and the U.S. was 62.8%.

Zhu Xinxin added that China’s Olympic gold medals
are only the product of China’s sports system.
If Chinese ordinary citizens cannot even possess
facilities, such as sporting venues, in their daily life, China will never be able to be titled as a sports power.
