Shangwei Mass Protest . Again with Official False Reporting

Around two months ago, a mass protest broke out in Shanwei,
Guangdong province, this was again repeated more recently.
On Nov.21, nearly 5,000 villagers filled the streets,
protesting against the local authorities’ illegal land acquisition.
The false official reporting incited villagers’ rage.
Villagers told NTDTV that they would carry on with their protest.

This September saw a mass outbreak of protest
in the village of Wukan, Shanwei city, Guangdong province.
More recently on November 21, came yet another outbreak
of protest . Villagers revealed to NTDTV that
4,000-5,000 villagers marched through the streets,
holding banners which were written with
“Down with official-enterprise collusions, return my land,
punish the corruption, return my rights, against the dictatorship".
They sat in front of the city hall until noon.

That evening, Southcn.com published an article titled
" Dissatisfied with Land Sale, Hundreds of Villagers Gathered
for Petition in city hall of Guangdong Lufeng. “

Mr. Xue (Wukan Villager) stated: “The local reports said that
about 400 peoplepetitioned.
The actual figure is at least no less than 4,000.
Someone estimates the number to be nearer to 6,000.
That’s between 4,000-6,000 people. So when we heard
the report saying we had only 400 people protesting there,
the whole village felt so angry. ”

An anonymous Wukan villiager said that villagers were all
furious at the fabrication and false reports.

One Wukan villiager said: “Now we villagers have been
incited to anger. Over 3,000 villagers protested in the streets.
The government is indifferent to the realistic problems,
only beating around the bush. This is the final result. “

Wukan village is located in the developed regions.
Over years, villagers have kept going to petition to
solve problems of village committee elections and lands disputes.
On September 21, hundreds of villagers gathered
at the village committee and police station,
protesting against collusions between officials and enterprises,
and their embezzlements of land sale revenue.
The protesting number rose to over 1,000 by the next day.
and a conflict broke out between police and protesters.
Afterwards, the local authorities promised to solve the problems,
but villagers revealed that they did not do so, until now.

The report on Southcn.com claimed that the September’s
protest drew high attention from officials of the
Chinese Commnunist Party (CCP) committee and municipal
in Shanwei city and Lufeng county.
Lufeng even set up three special task forces, and dismissed
the secretary and deputy secretary of CCP village branch.

Wukan villager stated: “We were not satisfied with the task forces
responses and investigations.
Who took the primary responsibility for September 21 conflict?
They all passed the buck.
The concerned personnel arrangement should be handled
following the state laws, instead of a simple dismissal.
Why were they dismissed? There must have been reasons, which
should definitely be investigated, rather than just allowing
them to resign. “

The report alleged that task forces of Shanwei city and
Lufeng county proposed five requirements, including
“Undertake the ideological work of villagers;
resolve their villagers’ appeal as soon as possible;
strengthen propaganda and maintain a correct orientation
for public opinion” .

Wukan villager said: “These five requirements took a tough
stance, without truly solving the problems.
If they didn’t break the law, nor undertook any improper approach,
why do they require doing ideological work of the villagers?
Their claim of, as soon as possible, didn’t define a time frame.
As to their strengthening propaganda and maintaining
a correct orientation for public opinion, just like this article,
it leads to the conclusion that they are right, we are wrong.”

Villager Mr. Xue said that on November 22, nearly 3,000
villagers continue to sit in the village to protest.
That afternoon, police and local market sup. went to the
village and ripped off protest banners.
Mr. Xue said: “All villagers said to stop all work until
the authorities give us a reasonable explanation.
Even going hungry and starving to death, we won’t go to
work. The protest will go on tomorrow."

Mr. Xue revealed that on November 23, the parade and
sitting would continue , with an estimated thousands of participants.
