Wen Jiabao on Forced Demolition of Heritage Villages
主播:
Due to urbanization in mainland China, many heritage villages
have disappeared, despite the fact that the premier of the
Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Wen Jiabao, criticized the
current urbanization, saying it is damaging the heritage culture
of China and forcing demolition of many villager’s homes.
Wen emphasized the importance of protecting the heritage.
However, according to historians, forced demolition is not
the only thing that has damaged the heritage culture of China,
The CCP has been damaging China』s heritage culture
from the very beginning of its rule.
In the speech made by Wen Jiabao on September 5,
during the 6oth anniversary
of the CCP Research Institute of Culture,
Wen mentioned that many Chinese are concerned about
the damage done to China』s cultural heritage
and forced demolition of villages.
Wen Jiabao pointed out that many local officials ignore
farmers』 legal rights, forcing demolition of their homes.
Historical villages are not the only losses incurred,
many suburban areas have lost its rural scenes.
Wen emphasized the importance of protecting cultural heritage.
According to China』s Institute of Folk Culture』s counselor
Feng Jicai, heritage villages are disappearing quickly.
Many local officials use the excuse of urbanization
to seek profits.
Instead of following cultural laws, they are driven solely by
financial gain, changing villages beyond recognition, and
swapping genuine heritage village for fake ones.
Commentator Wen Zhao said,
“There is a cultural heritage protection unit in China.
If a village qualifies for cultural heritage protection,
it cannot be removed.
However, under the CCP regime, heritage conservation
cannot be seen as political achievements.
Wen Zhao: “Local governments do not consider cultural
heritage protection as one of their achievement in politics.
Rather, they use Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Therefore, they are motivated by anything
that benefits their GDP.
Economic development is both a way to obtain funds
for local governments, and a means to cheat the state.
Wen Zhao said that if China doesn』t go through needed reform,
these same problems will persist.
Wen』s speech does nothing to solve the inherent problem.”
At the forum, Feng Jicai said, disappearing villages are
the crux of the problem,
as they represent economic opportunities for local officials.
In fact, one village』s development is followed by
another village being destroyed.
Many heritage villages are engulfed
in the wave of urbanization.
History professor, Xia Guiqi, believes that ever since the CCP
came to power, they damaged Chinese heritage villages,
as well as China』s cultural heritage.
Xia Guiqi: “After the CCP took over China,
the first thing they did was to enact land reform measures
to break the relationships between all the different ethnicities.
The CCP makes relationships between classes of people,
not relatives.
Originally, there was respect between relatives, i.e.:
the young respected their elders and elders acted as role models
in order to influence the next generation.
Then there is also respect from elders towards the young,
which is considered a part of moral education.
But the CCP wants to destroy all of this.
There are people who now think that the CCP is using its power
to destroy Chinese heritage culture, using it to benefit itself.
However, Voice of America believes that Wen』s speech
is a rare admonishment from the CCP towards the powerful
real estate development business.”
