Mao Against Mao

Renowned scholar Mao Yushi’s article
titled “Restore Mao Zedong to A Human Being”
published at caing.com caused a big uproar.
Left-wing website wyzxsx.com published many articles
indicting Mao Yushi and Xin Ziling.
Mao Yushi frankly expressed that he looks forward
to a clear debate in court. Xinzi Ling believes
that the leftists want to take this opportunity
to force the regime to express its attitude.

“Restore Mao Zedong to A Human Being”
is Mao Yushi’s book review
on “The Fall of the Red Sun” written by Xin Ziling.
The article uses a sharp tone to expose
Mao Zedong’s crimes during his leadership of China.
It says: “In order to shed the responsibility
of 30 million deaths due to starvation
caused by the Great Leap Forward, Mao Zedong launched
the Cultural Revolution, to put Liu Shaoqi to death,
as Liu criticized him for the starvation.
Mao wants to destroy all political opponents
and expand infinitely his own power.
In his view, people are a bunch of flesh and tools.”

A Utopia reporter saw signatures of Mao Zedong’s
daughter-in-law, and over 10,000 other signatures
on the indictment letter on wyzxsx.com.
They want to send the letter
to the National People’s Congress.

The indictment claims that Mao Yushi is defaming
Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Mao Zedong, and that
Mao Yushi collaborates with the “Jasmine Revolution"
and U.S. to overthrow the CCP’s political leadership.

Zhuang Daohe, legal scholar and one of the founders
of Law and Economics Research Center of Zhejiang Univ.,
said that many people agree with Mao Yushi’s view
which is based on historical facts.

Zhuang Daohe: “This elder has high morals
and social responsibility.
He has concern for the country and the people.
His views are not just personal views.
They are shared by many people in the society.
Mr. Mao Yushi summarized them
and presented them with some sharp facts.”

Beijing lawyer Xie Yan expressed that the indictment
reminded people of the Cultural Revolution,
when people were slapped with political labels,
and accused with no legal base.

“To put someone on trial in the name of the country
has no legal base. For the revival of our nation,
we need to clarify the history, restore the truth,
allow people to explore and have independent thinking."

Zhuang Daohe pointed out
the so-called public indictment has no legal base.
Only legal departments can indict a criminal.
Ye Yan also thinks that Mao Yushi’s article
is about freedom of speech.

Radio France Internationale (FRI) said on April 7,
that when Mao Yushi was giving a lecture
at Beijing Institute of Technology,
a middle-aged bald man started shouting
in the classroom, charged at the podium
and attempted to physically assault Mao Yushi.
According to an insider, this person called
Mao Yushi many times to harass and threaten him.

Mao Yushi told Apple Daily that he is waiting
for the indictment, so that the crimes and
achievements of Mao Zedong can be debated at court.

Another scholar under attack by the leftists
is Xin Ziling, former Dean of the National Defense
University of PLA. He said that the indictment
is to allow the CCP to enforce its own thinking.

According to overseas media, in December 2010,
CCP Political Bureau led by Hu Jintao adopted
a resolution not to include “Mao Zedong Thought”
in future CCP communications, meetings, resolutions,
policies, etc. Xinzi Ling believes this resolution
has caused panic to the leftists, and they want
to take this opportunity to pressure the government.
