Russia thanks Gorbachev, what about China?
Facing waves of democratic movement,
the leaders of authoritarian governments
are nervous. In contrast,
Russian President Medvedev looks more relaxed
as the authoritarian system in Russia was
disintegrated by the former Soviet leader Gorbachev.
And what about China, which has
the same communist system as that of USSR?
What is its reaction?
March 2nd was Gorbachev’s 80th birthday.
He received the most respectful treatment
in 20 years. President Medvedev
met him at his official residence
and presented him with the Medal of Honor.
Meanwhile , on the streets of Russia were erected
billboards with the words “Thank you Gorbachev! "
France-based political commentator, Jian Zhang:
“Without his efforts, no one can imagine that
an empire with powerful military force
which rivals that of the U.S.,
with a very strong constitution and police system,
could disintegrate; that people could have freedom.
It is hard to imagine. Therefore, we should thank
the efforts of the reformers, led by Gorbachev.”
After Gorbachev took power, there is freedom
of expression and a multi-party system.
His greatest achievement is destroying
the totalitarian dictatorship of the Soviet Union,
the peaceful disintegration of the USSR,
and the establishment of a new democratic country
– the Russian Federation.
Would CCP, once the Soviet Union’s “little brother",
wish to have reformers like Gorbachev?
Human rights activist from Jiangxi Province:
“Gorbachev is a hero in history. In China,
right before CCP’s ‘two meetings’ took place,
many people hoped that there would be reformers
appearing within the communist system.
Later, Bangguo Wu said they don’t want democracy,
or a multi-party system,
He completely denied the possibility.”
We can tell Chinese Communist Party still adheres
to communism discarded by many countries.
It insists on the one-party dictatorship. In contrast,
looking at today’s Russia, it has a comprehensive
economic and social development and progressing
towards prosperity. It’s development and changes
have shocked the world, but also shamed the CCP.
A 2007 World Bank report stated, that Russia’s
economy growth is in line with interests of the poor;
However, China’s economy development report
showed that from 2001 to 2005,
China economy grew at a rate of 10% per year.
But among its population of 1.3 billion people,
the real income of the poorest 10% fell by 2.4%.
Statistics show that growth rate of real income
in Russia exceeded the rate of national GDP growth.
So, everyone can benefit from the economic growth;
However, per capita income of most Chinese
lags far behind the GDP growth.
Zhang Jian:
“CCP has economic reforms but a political dictatorship,
which makes the development of China like a lame duck;
makes the economic development subject to threats
from its own system; makes the economic development
based on human rights violations, persecution,
and sacrifice of labor rights,
making today’s China more chaotic.”
Currently, facing waves of democratic movements,
the whole world notices the fear of the CCP.
Its fear has reached an irrational and hysteric level.
Guobin Yang, assistant professor of Department of
Asian and Middle Eastern culture, Bernard College,
Columbia University, published an article
“China’s Gradual Revolution" in New York Times.
The article said that the CCP doesn’t solve
the problem from its root cause of instability,
but it rather covers up or glosses over many issues.
Guobin Yang points out that the thought of
the Beijing authorities could be foreseen
by the 2012 budget of stability maintenance
being more than the national defense budget.
“China Jasmine Smile Revolution" website called
for the 5th wave of strolls on Sunday, March 20.
French Les Echos correspondent in China wrote
in an article: “Facing the discontent of its people
China (CCP) either implements
immediate political measures;
or is in dilemma of splitting from its people.
If it is the latter, the rebellion will be explosive.”
