American Dream with Chinese Descent

Gary F. Locke, U.S. Secretary of Commerce,
is nominated by President Obama as the
Ambassador to China.
How did Locke, from Chinese descent,
become an American politician?
What place would US and China take in his post?

Locke, 61, was born in Seattle.
His grandfather migrated to the US from Guangdong.
Locke’s father, who served in World War II,
was among the 21 Chinese in Normandy Landings.

(Original words: My father, even though he was born in China, came over to the United States as a teenager, he served in World War II for the United States army, and was part of the Normandy invasion under General Patton.)

Locke’s mother is from Hong Kong.
Being the second oldest of five children,
Locke worked at his father’s grocery store
to earn his tuition for school.
Locke attended Yale and Boston University
and became a lawyer in the 1970s.

Locke entered politics in the 1980s.
Elected as Washington State governor in 1996,
he was the first U.S. governor of Chinese descent.
Locke won the second term, living close by
the Seattle home his grandfather settled in.
Locke realized the American dream with his talent.

Zan Aizong, a Chinese reporter:
“This shows the tolerance of American culture, as
people of various backgrounds can fulfill their dreams
in the multi-cultural US, unlike CCP’s uniformity.
Obama’s election as president showed the same.”

Locke’s upbringing nurtured his strong personality
and kindness to others – and this helped his career.
In 2009, President Obama’s nomination of Locke
as the US Secretary of Commerce was backed up
by the Democratic Party and Congress.

Locke visited China frequently as a US official,
promoting US-China trade and other collaborations.
He asked China to open the market and float RMB,
said the US would remove the CCP’s trade barrier,
and was ready to resort to WTO if dialog failed.

Locke is experienced in US-China relations.
His insistence on American principles
resonates with President Obama.

(original words: I am going back to the birthplace of my grandfather, my father, my mom and her side of the family, but I will be doing so as a devoted and passionate advocate for America, the country where I was born and raised.)

Locke is fluent in English,
and speaks Mandarin and Cantonese.
His wife is Chinese, and they have three children.

Media in China are excited about Locke’s nomination,
calling it the “return of a wandering son.”
CCP’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also welcomes it.
Wu Fan, chief editor of China Affairs, believes
the CCP intends to draw closer to overseas Chinese.

Wu: “The key here is that he is from Chinese descent.
It does not mean he will serve the CCP.
CCP and the Chinese nation are two different things.
CCP mixes with Chinese descendants,
using them to serve its own interests.”

President Obama’s nomination of Locke
awaits Congress approval.
