On Golden Week – Chinese Clean Up Domestic Trash, Clean Out Brands Abroad

China’s October 1 Golden Week holiday has just ended.

During the week, major media had lots of coverage on various
phenomena caused by tourists, such as large amounts of trash,
traffic congestion, crowds at tourist attractions, etc.

Those who went abroad cleared out overseas stores, as foreign
goods are cheaper than China and are “the genuine article."

U.K.-based Daily Mail reported that in the past week,
many Chinese tourists showed up on the streets of London.
They are mostly the young and rich
and spent money without hesitation.

The goods these Chinese tourists like most are leather shoes,
brand name bags, watches, precious furnishings and so on.
According to a recent survey, the average Chinese tourist
buys 8,000 pounds ($12,800), or 78,800 yuan, worth of goods.

Chinese tour guide Ms. Li:
“They like to buy brand name bags and cosmetics.
Products are much cheaper abroad than in China."

In addition, according to the latest survey by
the German Tourist Centers and VAT Statistics agency,
Chinese tourists spend an average of 610 euros ($820),
over 5,000 yuan, in buying duty-free goods in Germany.
Tourism investigators Wolfgang Georg Arlt says
there is a very strong sense of trust.
“Chinese people believe there is no fake products in Germany,
and that traders dare not sell fake products."

U.S. tour guide Mr. Zeng: “China is a materialistic society.
People are not proud of how many books they have.
They are proud of the brand name products they own.
People are not proud of a happy family,
but the number of lovers and concubines they have.
So these concepts lead to a shopping market of vanity."

The places “with no counterfeits" have become
the first choice for Chinese tourists shopping.
Tour guide Mr. Zeng says Chinese tourists
have the most purchasing power
and are the “most irrational" shopping group in the world.

Mr. Zeng: “What they can touch upon are goods.
To them, U.S. civilization is high-tech and industrial products.
They do not touch upon the reason and
the system behind the goods.
Chinese tourists pay attention to shopping,
rather than the U.S. enterprises.
They focus on materials, not the spiritual aspect.
They want to show off that they have been to the U.S.,
instead of understanding the U.S."

Mr. Zeng says that many Chinese tourists are not interested in
spiritual and cultural aspects, such as
the U.S. Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution,
the stability of the structure of American society,
people’s freedom of religion and so on.

He thinks it is greatly related to the authorities.

Mr. Zeng: “The Chinese Communist Party government
never encourages people to have knowledge, wisdom,
abundant political rights, rights to criticize,
the right to freedom of speech, and the right to religion.
China’s government (the CCP) never promotes these.

They only advocate that people have the right of
having clothing and food, then traveling abroad for shopping.
They think this is people’s happiness.
The CCP does not tell the people there are more rights
to implement and to practice."

On the other hand, China’s Golden Week Holiday
also created lots of garbage domestically.
Although the authorities implemented the new version of
Tourism Law defining “Tourism Civilization",
the reality is embarrassing.

On the day before the October 1 Golden Week,
five tons of garbage was left after the flag ceremony
was held in front of Tiananmen Square.

At the Badaling Great Wall site,
109 tons of garbage was cleaned up during the Golden Week.

During the “National Mourning Day",waste output
at Tiananmen Square has increased year after year.
According to mainland China media reports, some parts of the
Tiananmen Square were completely covered by trash.
The CCP media didn’t want people to see such “grand" scenes.

In democratic countries, the media would for sure publish
high-definition pictures and let people see them.

On October 3, Xinhua net published eight pictures
in an article titled “Tons of Tiananmen Garbage Each Year".
It did not report the wave of garbage this year.
It is interesting to think about what could be the reason!
