“The Abducted Sunflower"

Artist Ai Weiwei, recently known as
“The Abducted Sunflower"
remains in the center of media attention.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is yet to reveal
Ai’s whereabouts. The global community calls
for Ai’s release, despite the CCP’s propaganda.

In October 2010, Ai’s work “Sunflower Seeds" was
installed at the Tate Modern Turbine Hall, London.

On April 9, Chinese and Western artists assembled
in London to protest the continued detention of Ai.
Protesters climbed into the Tate Modern’s display of
Ai’s “Sunflower Seeds" installation, and scattered
2000+ posters bearing the message: “Free Ai Weiwei."

On the same day, Danish sculptor Jens Galschiot
condemned the CCP on his website for detaining Ai,
and urged artists of the world, as well as
the Danish government, to express their protest.

The Taipei Contemporary Art Center also calls
for the release of Ai Weiwei.

Ai’s documentaries “Why Are the Flowers So Red"
and “Stewed Pork" will be shown at this year’s
Urban Nomad Film Fest in Taipei.

“Stewed Pork" documents the civil investigation on
the unsafe school buildings of Sichuan Earthquake.
Ai was beaten and hospitalized because of his
testimony in the court case of author Tan Zuoren,
who fought for justice for the students killed.

“Why Are the Flowers So Red" tells the story behind
the Sichuan Earthquake, reveals the lies of
authorities. The documentary was banned by CCP,
and its director, Ai Xiaoming, was forced to retire.

Beijing musician Wu Hongfei announced online that
her band “Happy Avenue" will hold a concert named
“Love the Future” on May 13 to support Ai Weiwei.

The CCP’s mouthpiece Xinhua slandered Ai Weiwei
by accusing him of “economic crimes,”
including tax evasion, without supporting evidence.

China’s leftist website wyzxsx.com also posted
articles slandering Ai as being “anti-China.”
Sima Nan, the national “hero of atheism”,
also smeared Ai Weiwei in an online video.

Sima accuses Ai of practicing “street politics
with foreign money,” and calls it “suspicious.”

Ai Weiwei’s mother Gao Ying states that
she will resort to legal measures unless
Sima provides evidence to support his accusation.

On Deutsche Welle, Ai’s mother said:
“You say he took foreign money.
What evidence do you have?
As a mother, I will get to the bottom of things.
If my son took “blood money", I would disown him.
My son is an upright member of the society,
earning his living with his own hands.
My son would not take such money.
I demand an explanation from Sima Nan.”
