“Even the Party Secretary Was Laughing”
Recently commencement of Beijing University’s
Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) School
was held in front of the main building.
The address of Fang Binxing, BUPT’s president,
dubbed as the “Father of China’s Great Firewall"
and “Enemy of netizens”, was criticized
as bureaucratic and promoting party education,
repelling both students and netizens alike.
Fang said, that students should always be patriotic.
Fang: “Use your wisdom to strengthen the country,
…guard stability as you will guard your eyes.”
This party-like speech in a bureaucratic style
has spread throughout the internet and it was
widely discussed and criticized by netizens.
Fang talked to students about the recent
Jasmine unrests in the Middle East and China.
He claimed that the political unrests in North Africa
and Middle East resulted in an anti-China force rise.
He said that the intention of civil rights members
overseas is to use internet’s amplifying effect
to harass China with keyboard strokes from home.
A student at BUPT said, “I sat in the front row
and couldn’t move back. I felt speechless then
and even the party secretary was laughing."
Fang’s speech was uploaded on the internet
and caused strong reactions from netizens.
One netizen, Xiao Wu, told Radio Free Asia:
“Nonsense. Fang could also tap his keyboard
and export revolutions and unrests to America
or Europe. He is free to do so as long as he
is capable of it. Also, it is such a common thing
for Americans to shout on the streets and express
their complaints, but no government would be
as sensitive as the CCP is. Fang talked about Libya.
But why didn’t he talk about Egypt or Tunisia,
which have peacefully solved the political unrests?”
Another netizen, Qizhuhuang, said: “This president
knows almost nothing about the current situation.
If America is irresponsible, it could’ve just withdrawn
its troops after the overthrow of Saddam’s regime,
considering the high cost of overseas troops.
The “rag of patriotism" can only fool those
without access to free information.”
Some netizens even exclaimed:
“Don’t try to fool us with such nonsense!”
Late last year Fang was again attacked by netizens.
He was invited to open a SINA microblog account.
but he was only able to say “Hi" to the CCTV MC,
Jing Yidan, when thousands of questions, messages
and criticism flooded in. Fang closed his microblog.
Similar to Fang’s words about loyalty to the party,
the Shanxi State Assets Regulatory Commission
recently issued a notice, calling on youth
in provincial corporations to become “red sentinels”,
and collect and report “harmful speech” on the net,
to maintain the good image of the country,
the province and the nationalized enterprises.
A civil rights member in Shanxi, Deng Taiqing, said:
“It is going back. If there are no problems with
the leaders of nationalized enterprises, they could
present the facts and don’t need to organize
a counterattack. But if they have problems,
the counterattack won’t be convincing
because it is against the fact.
Therefore, this measure is nothing but manipulating
public opinion to confront right with wrong.”
Deng told Radio Free Asia,
that after the government’s credibility collapses,
a piece of information could lead to unrests
or even to the fall of the entire communist regime.
