Communist Regime’s Internal Struggle vs. Military Tiger Gu Junshan

Former deputy logistics chief Gu Junshan was brought to prosecution on March 31 without further details about the charge. On April 2, PLA Academy of Military Sciences brigadier Gong Fangbin posted a blog revealing Gu’s case. This online post was cited by Chinese media but then deleted.

This phenomenon was interpreted as intense infighting of the Communist central in regard to the case of Gu Junshan.

On April 2, brigadier Gong Fangbin wrote an article on Sina blog about Gu Junshan’s corruption case. The article said that the trial had begun.

His post confirmed much of online figures, such as the cash, gold, real estate, expensive liquor and watches, as well as ivory, tiger skins, and fine calligraphy arts.

The discipline inspection team of the logistics department has confiscated 550 cases of Maotai found in his hometown.

Gong Fangbin characterized Gu’s corruption as “an extraordinarily huge corruption in its amount, scale, and influence."

Gong Fangbin revealed that the logistics leader had spent two hours reporting to former chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) Hu Jintao, recommending to deploy Gu out of the logistics. However, Hu Jintao believed Gu should be punished.

Gong Fangbin also indicated that Xi Jinping has particularly pointed at Gu Junshan’s case several times and instructed a thorough investigation of his corruption case.

On April 5, many Chinese websites published Gong Fangbin’s post. However, the postings were all deleted on March 6.Lan Su, commentator: “This semi-official publication and quick deletion signals the internal struggle of the regime in
Gu Junshan’s case."

On April 2, the military PLA Daily reported that 18 active duty generals pledged their loyalty to Xi Jinping, whereas a day earlier, the New York Times had reported that Gu Junshan “gave up information on just about everyone" in the investigation, especially former vice-chairman of the CMC, Xu Caihou.

Wu Fan, commentator: “Gu Junshan’s case serves to fight corruption and to discipline the military. Xi Jinping is using his case as a tool to consolidate his control in the military. Gu Junshan is a big tiger in the army. His case can threaten those in power in the army. This exposure and deletion of the details is simply a process of the internal struggle."

It is understood that Jiang Zemin had promoted Xu Caihou, who was eventually the spokesperson of the military corruption. Sources from Beijing revealed that Gu Junshan had once bribed Xu Caihou with a 12-cylinder Audi A8 filled with gold.

Commentator Lan Su indicates that other than Xu Caihou, Gu Junshan has another more important patron in the army. That is the former director of the CMC General Office Jia Tingan.

Lan Su: “Jia Tingan was Jiang’s secretary. If Gu Junshan was sacked, not only Xu Caihou, but also Jia Tingan should be involved. Investigation of Jia Tingan will directly get to Jiang Zemin. That would possibly be the reason why Gu Junshan’s case has been investigated for two years. The regime central is yet to reach a compromise."

According to the regime’s mouthpiece Xinhua News Agency, Gu Junshan was prosecuted by military procuratorate on March 31 on alleged corruption, bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.

Since Gu’s case could involve military secrets, this criminal case will be conducted at the military court, and the hearing will not be open to the public.

Lan Su: “The military court trial will not be open. Much of the evidence will not be published in the media, and thus who ever is involved will not be revealed either."

Commentator Wu Fan indicates that the regime is releasing information just enough to put pressure on the military tigers. No trial will be public.
