Tibetan Self-immolations Draw Support from Overseas

After Chinese Communist Party’ (CCP) 18 congress,
Tibetans continue to protest against its coercion with growing self-immolations.
Since last week, four self-immolation incidents of Tibetans,
resulting in three deaths, have taken place in Tibet, Qinghai and Sichuan province.
The armed police quickly responded with strict control
over the localities of the incidents.
At the same time, overseas groups started signature
movements to call on the global society to pay closer attention to the situation in Tibet.
This is expected to help prevent
more violent suppression by the CCP.
Let’s have a look at the current situation in Tibet.

On November 26th, a 24-year-old Tibetan Gongbuciren
self-immolated in Luqu, Gannan Prefecture, Gansu province.
Before dying, he shouted slogans like, ‘Freedom for Tibet,’
‘Human rights in Tibet,’ ‘Let H.H. Dalai Lama return to Tibet.’

The next day, a 20-year-old Tibetan Gesangjia also shouted
slogans before the township government building in Ruoergai County, Ngaba Prefecture, Sichuan province.
He poured gasoline over his body,
and burned himself to death.
Fully-armed police arrived after Gesangjia’s immolation,
and took strict control over the locality.

Cabinet member of Tibet Government in Exile,
Gesangjianzan spoke on the issue.
He said, there was no discussion at all on the Tibetans’
self-immolation incidents at CCP’s 18th congress.
No moderate policy on Tibet was announced
by the new CCP leadership group as the congress closed.
On the contrary, only provincial leaders of Tibet appeared
in the press conference, and announced Dalai Lama should be responsible for all the incidents as usual.
Gesangjianzan said, Tibetans were deeply disappointed at
what they saw,
bringing them chose to self-immolation too,
as a stronger way to express their protest against the CCP.

Gesangjianzan (Tibet Government in Exile Cabinet member):
”After the 18th congress, CCP’ even began to punish local Tibetans, where self-immolations took place.
They are not allowed to mourn
for their deceased family members.
They are not allowed to support,
visit or donate to victims of self-immolation.
In addition, they carried out many brainwashing activities
to apply even stronger mental pressure on the Tibetans.
All those political measures have led
to more self-immolation incidents.”

The roster of the Secretariat of the CCP’s central
committee was just announced.
Yang Jing, former vice minister of the United Front Work
Department and chief of Ethnic Affairs Committee, was elected in the top seven leaders’ standing committee.
Since Yang Jing is a Mongolian himself, will he bring
changes to the situation in Tibet and other minority groups?
Dawacairen, president of Tibet Religious Foundation
of H.H. the Dalai Lama, believes the answer is no.

Dawacairen (president of Tibet Religious Foundation of H.H.
the Dalai Lama): ”No matter what kind of person he is.
His policies have to be consistent with that
of the CCP’s central committee.
At most he can more or less control the strength
in executing the policies but he is not able to change them.
However, the current Tibet’ issue
lies in the policies themselves.
Especially in CCP’s attitude over Tibet’ problem and how
it rules the Tibetans, rather than the strengths in implementing them.”

On November 26th, thousands of students from Hainan
Medical School in Qinghai made a street protest against an official file from the local propaganda department.
The file stated that studying Tibetan language is useless,
and described self-immolation as “stupid behavior.”
The protest was consequently suppressed by the armed
police. Tens of students were injured and several arrested.

Gesangjianzan remarked that the CCP had never looked inward
for mistakes from the increasing protests and self-immolations.
Instead, they sent groups of armed police to beat or arrest
the students or other people which will only result in more anger from the Tibetans.

Gesangjianzan: ”The CCP have attempted to present
in the schools the act of self-immolation as immoral.
But such a Cultural-Revolution-like propaganda method
can no more deceive the people.
Everyone knows clearly now that the real reason for those
self-immolations is the CCP’s repressive policies on Tibet and its people.”

So far, the number of self-immolations
has increased to nearly 90 in Tibet.
More and more Tibetans have chosen
to protest by giving up their lives.
All those tragic incidents were echoed by strong reactions
from the global society.
There have been overseas groups working in coordination
with Tibetan organizations toward a letter of appeal.
The letter is aiming at countries’ heads, congress members,
human right organizations, media, the EU, UN, etc..
The letter likes to draw a closer global attention
toward the situation in Tibet.
It wants to schedule an independent investigation on Tibet,
revealing the truth behind the self-immolations, and to finally stop CCP from further suppressing the Tibetans.
