Hu Na Returns to China

Anchor:
In 1982, Hu Na, a native of China and the former champion
of the WTA tournament, left her team in the United States,
with no thought of returning to her home country.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) considered this treason.
As a result, they decided to break off their sporting affiliation
with the United States for one year.
After 30 years, Hu Na has returned to Beijing as a tennis narrator,
which has triggered concerns and discussions.

Reporter:
Hu Na was born into a tennis family,
with a focus on Chinese tennis.
At 16, she won the national championship in China
and at 18 she won the Asian tennis championship.
In 1982, Hu Na, along with China’s women’s tennis team went to the U.S. to participate in the Federal Cup in Santa Clara, California.
Later, she left the team and sought political asylum in the U.S.

The following year, the U.S. government granted her asylum.
Chinese authorities regarded her ‘defection’ as very serious,
and the Ministry of Culture announced
it would stop all Sino-U.S. cultural exchange projects that year.
China Sports Federation also decided to stop all Sino-U.S.
bilateral sports exchanges in 1983.

Sina Network invited Hu back to Beijing to be a sports narrator
for the 2011 China Tennis Contest, 30 years after she left China.
She recalled her decision to stay in the U.S.
during a Beijing News interview.
She said, “When watching the U.S. Tennis Match for the first time

in 1979, she dreamed about competing in a New York stadium.
Because the CCP system system did not allow players join
the tour match, her dream went unfulfilled.

She decided to stay in the U.S.,
Hu made it to the third round at Wimbledon in 1985,
racking up the best results for Chinese players.
Hu later made it into the second round in the U.S. tournament,
finally her dream becomes the truth.

In 1992, Hu left professional sports, due to an injury,
and moved to Taiwan, where she often appeared
as a TV tennis commentator.

After the Beijing News interview with Hu Na was published,
it sparked a lot of controversy among netizens.
Some expressed their understanding and support for her
getting rid of the shackles staying in the United States.
Some suggested that Hu Na returned to Beijing for money.

However you choose to view it, without the CCP’s
national system, Hu might never have chosen to leave China.
Chen Kai, a former star on China’s national basketball team,
said that the “national system” and the “CCP burden,”
severely restricts Chinese athletes’ development.

Chen Kai gave an example from 2002 when Wang Zhizhi,
the top player in China’s national men’s basketball team,
once asked if he could join the NBA in the U.S.
He reached an impasse with the Chinese Basketball Association
and was expelled from the national team.

But four years later, Wang wrote a so-called ‘repentance letter,’
saying that he was willing to accept any form of punishment.
He later returned to Beijing to rejoin the national team.

Chen Kai: “So then, the Chinese team to see his explanation,
apparently, what he wrote could be used as propaganda by the CCP
‘Look, this man wanted to leave China, however, after failing
in the U.S., he wanted to come back!’
His actions lacked dignity, principle, and a sense of value, thus
the CCP publicized this criticism in front of the whole nation."

In June 2011, Li Na, who had previously left the China,
won the French Tennis championship, but did not immediately
“thank the party, thank the state."

Instead, she thanked her sponsors and her team members.
Some people said, “This is a victory for China!"
Li Na thought that this argument “went too far,"
stressing, “This is just my dream come true."

In July, the Hubei Provincial Party Committee granted Li
the title of Pioneer Across Hubei, and held a ceremony
in honor of her success in the province.

Chen Kai said: “In the celebration meeting, authorities gave
her RMB 600,000 (US$94,350).
Li Na then changed her tune, saying,
“I want to thank the party. My success is due to the CCP’s support."

The incident stirred up many feelings within Chen Kai.
He believes that each person should assume
their own moral responsibility and not abandon their principles
when faced with the CCP’s financial inducements,
and do not make excuses for themselves, thus enabling
the system to change in China.

Chen Kai: “The key is that everyone tries to avoid
personal responsibility for their actions.
‘When I make a decision, it was not my decision,
but the CCP brainwashed me, what can I do about it?’
This is the greatest tragedy of the CCP culture.
Individuals are taught to give up their moral responsibility."

To survive under the existing CCP system, Net Ease sports news
drew a conclusion: the ‘national system’ plus ‘solo escape’
will probably be perpetuated.
The same thing applies to all Chinese behavior models,
the law-makers always have the priority ,
while solo escape is just the only alternative under the pressure.
Anyway, they drive by the gold medals."
