“I Even Applauded 9/11 Attacks”

主播:

On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks,
people in the U.S. and international communities

expressed condolences to all the innocent victims.

The death of Bin Laden, mastermind of the attacks,
marked the decline in worldwide extremist terrorism.

Ten years ago, many Chinese celebrated the 9/11 attacks,
and now they are introspecting themselves,

apologizing online to the American people,
expressing their shame of cheering at that time.

On September 11, a memorial ceremony was held
at the site of the World Trade Center in New York.
The families of the victims read out
the names of 2976 victims.
U.S. officials attending did not give lengthy political speeches,
instead, they read verses from the Bible.
U.S. ex-President George W. Bush quoted Lincoln’s letter.

He thanked those rescue workers who made sacrifices
to save lives, and was proud of the bravery of U.S. citizens.
President Barack Obama said, from the 9/11 event, one can
see how the strength of U.S. lies in Americans’ goodness.
The U.S. adheres to its core values of equality, democracy,
freedom of speech and freedom of religious belief,
rather than suppression with threat for further attacks.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that terrorists
do not attack against only one country alone,
they attack against the universal values of peace and dignity.
Ban called on people around the world to counter terrorism.
However, media of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
continued inciting anti-American sentiments.
Xinhuanet.com published articles entitled,
“Terrorism Ceaseless In U.S. After 9/11,"
“10 Years After 9/11: The More U.S. Are Against Terrorism,
The More The Terror Is?”
But domestic online public opinions present introspection
and sympathetic views on the 9/11 attacks.
Sohu.com launched a special coverage entitled “China’s
Change Of View On The Decade of Terrorism.”
The reports cited survey data, revealing that when the 9/11
attacks took place, the majority of Chinese people
did not feel sorrow or sympathy,
some even admitted to have laughed out loud.
The special coverage said that even when facing over 3,000
innocent deaths, Chinese people showed indifference.
A netizen from Guangzhou believes that the fundamental
reason behind such a phenomenon
is derived from guidance of education and media reports,
and from the extreme lack of respect for life.
Jiao Guobiao (ex-professor, Institute of Journalism,
Beijing University): “The authorities utilized propaganda
to continue demonizing the U.S., such as
“The U.S, is the biggest enemy of China.”
This is more evil than satires. All China’s mainstream media
and official media have unprecedented evil psychology.”
The special coverage points out
that on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks,
most Chinese have come closer to the universal values,
and they “are brought in line with international norms.”
The report quoted a netizen’s remarks: “9/11 events were
the acts of terrorism attacking freedom and democracy,
attacking the human conscience,
justice and righteousness.”
The forum of People.com.cn is a popular site
for Chinese youth to vent nationalist sentiment.
The website now also appears sound of introspection.

Some netizens said, “Most of the angry youth who cheered
the 9/11 attacks now feel deeply regretful.”
“This month we should act like the American people
and grieve for those innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks.”
Sun Erdai (Netizen, Shenzhen): “Now I’ve changed
my thinking, mainly because I think that every person,
whatever the country, is human. Everyone has compassion.

When others suffer misfortune, we should give a hand,
rather than hitting them when they are down.”
Wu Gan (Netizen): “I apologize to the American people.
I ask for your forgiveness and say that I’m sorry.
Ten years ago today, with a big head and ignorance,
I even applauded 9/11 attacks.
Fortunately, I haven’t been stupid to the bitter end.

While I still have a chance, I would like to say I am sorry.”

The microblog on which Wu Gan made this post
received many responses from netizens alike.
Sun Erdai (Netizen): “I wanted very much to apologize
to the American people. I hope they can forgive me
because at that time, I was very ignorant,
and didn’t understand the truth.
Now I ask the American people for their forgiveness.”

Li Tianxiao, Ph.D. in Political Science at Columbia University,
believes that for a long time CCP deliberately confused
the concepts of “love for China" and “love for CCP." CCP
has instilled Chinese people with xenophobic patriotism.
This is perhaps the main reason behind why many
Chinese people were celebrating the 9/11 attacks.
The 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks
is the same day of the 3rd anniversary
of China’s melamine tainted milk incident.
Online posts point out that CCP’s state terrorism
is the source of all man-made and natural disasters
that have happened in China.
Netizens stress that it poisons the Chinese people
mentality and morality, suppresses expression of opinion
and freedom, and is more evil than terrorist organizations.

According to commentator Cao Changqing,
CCP’s dictatorship has been supporting the terrorism.
Cao stresses the necessity of anti-terrorism actions.

He believes that overthrowing the autocratic regime
is most fundamental in the defeat of the terrorism.
