Hugs’ Different Results

Recently, two similar hugs took place in China and Taiwan,
but with totally different results.
One is Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou being hugged
by a mainland tourist, who was pulled aside by the securities.
However, mainland media reported that she was “arrested”.
In Puyang, Henan Province,
a local official put his hand on singer Song Zuying’s shoulder.
He was detained for five days and lost his job.
So how do people view these two events?

When Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou visited Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall,
a large group of mainland tourists were very excited to see him.
They shouted his nickname. Ma shook hands with them.
One female tourist got very excited and hugged Ma’s neck, asking for a photo together.
She was dragged away immediately by security.
When media later asked Ma if he was hugged, he smilingly said it was ok.

However, the story got totally changed in mainland China.
On July 10, Xinhua News reported that “the female tourist was arrested and taken away.
" Taiwanese presidential office spokesman refuted this “false report."
Taiwan’s legal professionals were also very surprised.

Taiwanese human rights lawyer Chiu Huangquan: “Taiwan is a democratic and free country.
The president is elected by the people.
He is not an emperor. All political leaders need to get close to the people.
They have to please the people.
It is important for them to get close to the masses. “

Mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),
Global Times’ correspondent in Taipei,
on July 12 testified in writing that none of Taiwan’s major newspapers reported the arrest.
Chiu also learned this news.

Chiu: “I think that was her natural move.
President Ma had no particular adverse reactions.
The president has a special mandate, so his security is very important.
After the incident, people just think
whether the security was a little negligent. That was all.”

On July 13, Ma just celebrated his 61st birthday.
He has more than 710,000 fans on Face book.
This year, more than 10,000 people send him birthday wishes.
Many were from mainland China.

Chu Jing, a mainland dissident writer,
said that if Ma was hugged by a mainland tourist,
it shows that he is admired by the mainland Chinese.
Xinhua is thinking of the story in a very mean way.

Jing Chu: The Central Propaganda Department and
Xinhua always misunderstand and then mislead the people.
They thought Taiwan’s president is like his CCP counterpart.
The CCP’s president is surrounded by heavy security.
They thought Taiwan’s president should be in the same situation.
So the president-hugging woman must be arrested, reasoned Xinhua.

About two weeks ago,
during a so-called “patriotic song" performance in Puyang, Henan.
Wang Juliu, an official of Hucun Village,
grabbed singer Song Zuying’s shoulder, when taking a photo with her.
Song was smiling throughout her performance.

However, the mainland media recently reported that
Wang was detained for five days and was dismissed.
He used to be a relatively high-ranking local official.
Many netizens found his punishment “too severe”.

Chiu also believes that Wang’s behavior did not break the law.

Chiu: Terrible! Absolutely unimaginable!
This can only occur in an authoritarian and inhumane regime.
There is no rule of law at all.
If you want people having physical contact with certain people to be punished,
you need to get it legislated.

However, many Chinese people know the reason.

Jing Chu: “Song is only a singer.
She should be ok with being hugged by her audience. I think this is overdone.
However, as Song is the CCP’s ex-leader Jiang Zemin’s mistress,
people joked, “How dare you hug the first lady? Do you want to die?

Song, 44, is of Miao minority and is a major general.
She can enter at will the CCP central government’s Zhongnanhai.
And it is always rumored that she has an affair with Jiang.
A book titled “National Mother Song Zuying” was published by a private bookseller in Hunan.
This book shocked the CCP leaders and the author was sentenced later.
More than 50 people involved with the publication were convicted.
