Hong Kong Universal Suffrage Calls for Referendum

On June 14, the 84 hour rally for universal suffrage took place
at Chater Garden in the Central District, Hong Kong.

Organized by a number of civil societies and political parties,
the seven day activities will go through 18 districts.

The activities urge the public to participate in the June 22
Civil Referendum and support the universal suffrage proposal.

Please see the following report.

On the June 14, hundreds of people took part
in the Hong Kong Universal Suffrage March.

Participants included Cardinal Bishop Emeritus
of Hong Kong, Joseph Zen,
founding chairman of the Democratic Party, Lee Chu-ming,
former Chief Secretary, Anson Chan,
Chairman of the Civic Party, Audrey Eu,
and Labor Party Chairman Lee Cheuk-yan.

Audrey Eu: “This is a key moment.
You see what I have here.
It says, ‘Hong Kong Crisis.’

I think Hong Kong people really need to come out.
That’s why we march today.

We want everyone know and everyone to vote, get online
between June 20 and 22, or learn how from our flyer."

Audrey Eu stresses that every step, every drop of sweat,
and every vote is very crucial to the Hong Kong people.

The vote is not only a matter of political reform;

It’s also a good opportunity for people to familiarize
themselves with electronic voting and get the message out.

Voice of America (VOA) reported that more than a thousand
people have registered for the universal suffrage walk.

In seven days, the participants will visit 18 districts from June
20 to 22 to urge the public to vote on civil political reform.

They hope to draw 300,000 people to vote.

The 76-year-old lawyer Lee Chu-ming told VOA that due
to Beijing’s publication of the white paper, the universal
suffrage campaign has become a protest against Beijing’s
breaking the ‘one country two systems’ of Hong Kong.

The 82-year-old Cardinal Joseph Zen believes that in order
to defend freedom, Hong Kongers must fight for democracy

They must tell Beijing that Hong Kong people are not lackeys.

The Alliace for True Democracy convener Joseph Cheng
explains the campaign calls for more Hong Kong people
to stand up and clearly voice their aspirations and attitudes.

The movement is anticipated to encourage more
Hong Kong people to get involved.

Joseph Cheng: “In fact they are very clear that Beijing wants
to control the election through the nomination procedure.

That’s why they care about the nomination and they want
to participate in the nomination."

Historically, the CCP has constantly attempted various means
to strengthen control over Hong Kong and instill its ideology.

In 2003, former leader Jiang Zemin attempted to use
the Hong Kong Basic Law Article 23 to extend the persecution
of Falun Gong into Hong Kong, but met with protest
of 500,000 Hong Kongers.

Consequently, this draconian law was indefinitely shelved.

Mr. Pang in Hong Kong: “The Communists’ promise cannot
be trusted. Those who believe it are always in trouble.

If Hong Kong does not fight for it, there will be
Party Secretaries everywhere, from church to the work place."

About a year ago, Occupy Central was initiated by organizers
such as legal scholar Benny Tai from Hong Kong University.

They intended to conduct universal suffrage based on
international standards for the 2017 chief executive elections.

It is a democratic and non-violent approach of civic
consultation, authorization, dialogue, negotiations and civil
disobedience.

On June 4 this year, hundreds of thousands of Hong Kongers
conducted a candlelight vigil to commemorate the 1989
Tiananmen Massacre.

On June 10, the CCP State Council released the first white
paper on the ‘one country two systems’ practice in Hong Kong.

It claimed a high degree of autonomy is granted under
‘authorization’ of the Central.

This white paper was regarded a damage to the Basic Law,
and caused extreme dissatisfaction to the Hong Kong people.

Mr. Li, City University of Hong Kong:
“The greater the oppression, the greater the resistance.

The white paper is exactly the white terror.

It threatens the people in Hong Kong to behave.

We are not making troubles, but fighting for our basic rights."

Accordingly, the unofficial Civil Referendum
will be held on June 20 to 22.

Commissioned by the ‘Occupy Central’ action secretariat,
it is operated by Public Opinion Programme at the University
of Hong Kong, and Research Centre for Social Policy Studies
at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The objective is to achieve authorization for the Hong Kong
civilians in the 2017 Hong Kong Chief Executive Election
with specific proposals, principles and stance to the Government.
