Important New Evidence on Li Zhuang’s Case
Recently, Li Zhuang’s case that received
much outside attention had a new progress.
Gong Gangmo’s party commissioned an attorney to submit
an important evidence to the court on Li Zhuang’s case.
The evidence was to prove Chongqing’s police had forced
Gong into perjury, accusing falsely Li Zhuang.
Li applied to the Chongqing court to summon Wang Lijun
and others as witnesses on the “Li Zhuang perjury case."
On March 25, Li Zhuang, former lawyer of
Beijing Kang Da Law Firm,
submitted Application For Witnesses To Testify to
Chongqing Municipal First Intermediate People’s Court.
It invites as witnesses Wang Lijun, ex-head of Chongqing
Public Security Bureau, its’deputy director Guo Weiguo,
Wang Zhi, Shapingba District Public Security Bureau deputy,
and Xiong Feng, police officer handling the case.
Li said, Wang Lijun and others deliberately fabricated facts,
and plotted Li’s perjury case to remove legal constraints of
Chongqing’s “attacking triads" movement.
They threatened Gong Gangmo’s party for perjury to frame
the defense attorney, which impacted the case significantly.
Therefore Li applied to the court to summon Wang Lijun
and the others to testify.
Li Zhuang: “Applying for witnesses to testify
is a right of every citizen.
As to whether he will be able to appear in court,
that is another matter.
I applied for it, as this is my right. I have officially submitted
an application and we will see if the court can inform him."
China’s Financial News online reported, Gong Gangmo’s
attorney Wang Wanqiong went to the court with Li Zhuang.
Wang submitted to the court four copies of transcripts
made in August and September 2012,
as well as the testimony that Chongqing police
had forced Gong Gangmo to make.
In the transcripts, Gong describes in details
the process of him being forced to frame Li Zhuang,
admitting that he was indeed forced
to make false confessions.
Li Zhuang: “Materials submitted by them (Wang Wanqiong)
had sufficiently proved that Gong Gangmo was in collusion with them (the police,)
and that (Gong) had been forced to cooperate with them
in the deliberate creation of a trumped-up case.
He reported me, and fabricated my criminal plots."
Wang Wanqiong also showed a tear of a cigarette box.
On it policeman Xiong Feng, member of the panel,
had left the phone number of Wang Zhi, the team leader.
Xiong asked Gong to call Wang Zhi when
ready to falsely testify against Li Zhuang.
In June 2009, when the’sing red – hit black’campaign
was launched by Chongqing party secretary Bo Xilai,
Gong Gangmo, former general manager of Chongqing
Silver Steel Group, was arrested by the Chongqing’s police.
This case has also been called,
‘The first case of attacking Chongqing’s triads.’
Li Zhuang became Gong’s attorney, and shortly after that
police said Li was abetting Gong to make false confessions.
In February 2010, Li was sentenced to year and a half
imprisonment and his lawyer’s license was revoked.
After Li Zhuang was released in 2011,
he started to make complaints on his case.
Due to the so-called meritorious reports,
Gong was sentenced to life in prison, and is now in prison.
It is unclear why Gong is choosing to speak out now,
admitting his perjury in framing Li Zhuang.
Wang Wanqiong: “I think this is based on his willingness,
and we just convey it as it is.
As for his specific considerations, we cannot speculate."
The outside world reported that after Wang Lijun’s event,
Li Zhuang’s appeal had a major turnaround.
But Li Zhuang thought his case does not have
strong connection with Wang Lijun’s incident.
Li Zhuang: “Up to now, there is no substantial progress.
One can say there is a major turnaround,
but there is no significant progress to date.
It’s all court’s investigation, verification of related materials,
there is no substantial breakthrough.
It might be because of the large work load,
or because it involves so many people?"
On March 25, Ma Xiaojun, former assistant of Li Zhuang,
had also appeared in court.
He testified that the three times Li Zhuang met with Gong,
Li had not abetted Gong into perjury.
Ma Xiaojun said he and his wife were illegally detained
in Chongqing by the police,
and were forced to write a declaration of
being unwilling to testify in court for Li Zhuang.
