“No" to Election Bribery
There is increasing distrust in the grassroots people
towards Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
During elections, despite CCP officials’ bribes,
village electors still do not vote for them.
Foreign media reported, the villagers have awaken
to the fact that the elected representatives
are closely related to interests in rural lands.
Electors are no longer willing to give up
land interests in exchange for minor benefits.
Grassroots elections are taking place in Guangzhou.
Many electors say a vote is bought for RMB1,000.
In Meitian Village, a candidate blatantly posted
bribery posters that read: “Village electors,
please contact us for registration from now on,
until we have more than half of the votes."
A villager posted such copies of the posters online,
saying that for years election candidates at Meitian
have been using money to bribe villagers.
Previously, a ballot was worth RMB100-300.
This year candidates pay RMB1,000 per ballot,
presumably because some farmland in the village
was expropriated for Airport Free Trade Zone.
Elected village representative would benefit greatly,
hence candidates are willing to spend big money.
During general election in Xingtan Town,Foshan,
villagers said each ballot is bought for RMB1,000.
A netizen revealed that in Wulong Village,
Baiyun District, a vote is bought for RMB3,000.
Ms. Zhou from Xiyong Village told Radio Free Asia,
that over the years the land was sold in large lots,
and the compensation to the village was embezzled.
Not everyone is willing to sell his vote for RMB1,000.
A netizen exclaims: “From People’s National
Congress, to CPPCC, to local elections, all of them
cheated. Villages just follow suit. It’s just normal.”
A Nanhua villager wrote online that this year
people seem to have a more clear understanding.
Nanhua Village started expropriating land & homes.
What is the compensation? Can villagers live on it?
“These all depend on the village head that we elect!”
Radio Free Asia reported that across China
villagers stand up “to say no to election bribery",
due to raising severe demolitions and corruption.
Elected in 2005 three officials of Xiyong Village
were sent to prison for involvement in land rights
protection in 2007, after being charged with
“gathering crowds to disturb social order".
In early 2011, in Zhuangyuan Village, Zhejiang,
local government forced villagers to sign consents
in support of pro-government representatives.
Some villagers accused authorities of manipulation
and black box operations, only to be arrested.
A netizen wrote: “In a village in Fanyu District,
the village Head casually transfers villagers’ money
between banks, getting RMB100,000 commission.
Although knowing this, I have no way to stop him!
The village Head sold our land for a compensation
of RMB100 per month. Where is the justice!"
In March 2011, in Houge Village,Qingdao, the CCP
secretary ordered rascals to mob the villagers,
which highlights the intensifying conflicts between
the “anti-demolition" grassroots and CCP officials.
There are reports that the people across China
are increasingly active in grass-roots elections.
Party officials couldn’t get votes even with bribes.
People have cast their awakening indirectly
with a vote of non-confidence for the CCP.
