Concerns over bizarre death of Sichuan reporter

June 22, Sichuan newspaper reporter Liu Qi
mysteriously died from jumping off a hotel building.
It triggered netizens’ concern.

In addition, the recent arrests of several reporters
has given rise to worry amongst the people.
As if being a reporter is a high risk.

June 23, Chengdu Business Post microblogged, according to
a police investigation in Wusheng County, Sichuan:
On June 22, Liu Qi went to a friend’s wedding in his hometown.
He checked in to a hotel which was located on the 2nd floor.
At 1.30am on June 23, Liu’s body was found, thought to have
died from severe injuries caused by falling from the building.

Many netizens questioned that Liu’s death was strange,
as Liu was only 27 years old & just registered for his wedding.
In addition, on June 22 he wrote news about a traffic accident
involving a flammable chemical spill.
Netizens revealed that the hotel is a safety hazard, yet
the hotel denies any responsibility.
Some unidentified people prevented Liu’s family
from going to appeal.

Liu Yiming, journalist of China magazine in Wuhan,
Hubei Province stated that the current system
causes a high-risk to journalists’ safety.

Liu Yiming: “There is no freedom of speech and expression
in China. Thus the job of reporter is very dangerous.
Reporters feel it’s fine to not do truthful reports.

In China if one speaks the truth,
one may face persecution, even death.”

Now, apart from Chengdu Business Post issuing Liu Qi’s
death notice, the authorities did nothing else.
Netizens condemned, though being colleagues of Liu’s,

China magazine’s reporters showed no concern
for Liu Qi & his accident.

Netizen @wangmiao’s-brother said: “23 days ago,
journalist Du Bin was arrested in Bejing;
On June 21, journalist Hu Yazhu in Nafang Daily
was taken away by the courts officials;
Today, journalist Liu Qi mysteriously jumped off
a hotel building and died.
So many incidents have recently taken place, but for media
& reporters alike, it’s as though nothing has happened.
Did they all become numb or scared to death?”

Reporter Hu Yazhu of Nanfang Daily in Guangdong,
jointly issued an article with reporter Liu Wei’an.
The article exposed Shaoguan City deputy party secretary
Lin Yaoming’s corruption during his tenure.

Liu Wei’an was a reporter for the legal column of Nanfang
website, which was a part of Southern Media Group.

The authorities accused Liu Wei’an and Hu Yazhu of
taking bribes, then arrested them.
Sources said that both had issued several articles about
supervision of public opinion.
Many netizens believe that their arrests are related to the
sensitive content of the articles.

Liu Yiming: “The authorities used economic crimes as an
excuse, it is a political persecution.
I think if one dares to challenge the power & expose corrupt
Officials, this reporter is relatively in high moral standards.
He will very unlikely to accept bribes.”

Some commentators said that apart from being
restricted on reporting,
journalists in China have to face the life threats
and also the temptation of money.

Zhang Xinyu, founder of Global Information
Free Movement website,
said the current system is the leading cause of
a poor environment for journalists in China.

Zhang Xinyu: “Regarding freedom of publication,
we hope to gain us more freedom.
However, as long as the Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) exists,
it will put more effort on not allowing us
more freedom of publication.
As that is the evil nature of the CCP.”

International Federation of Journalists sent a letter
to Beijing authorities.
The letter demanded the release of imprisoned journalists.

The letter criticized the Communist regime
for routinely detaining reporters,
and the violation of reporters
fundamental freedoms and human rights.
The letter said “The only thing (the journalists) are guilty of
is fulfilling their professional duty as journalists to inform the public.”
Last year in China, potentially over 30 journalists
were imprisoned, awaiting trial.
China has the highest numbers of journalist’s imprisoned,
in the world.
