Mass Execution – Who are the Accomplices?

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary

Feature at the 86th Oscars,

The Act of Killing covers the massacre of hundreds of thousands

of Chinese during the Indonesian Suharto regime.

This movie has received multiple documentary film awards.

It documents the atrocities by former death squad participants in

the massacres,

which not only draws attention to the history of that

dark period, but also reflects on the anti-Chinese riots in

Indonesia.

Reporter:

The Act of Killing, took six years to finish.

This hit documentary in 2013 explores the Thirtieth of

September Movement that killed 300,000 Chinese in Indonesia.

In the late 1950s, to support the Indonesian Communist Party

(ICP),

the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) provided

monetary, military, and revolution resources making the ICP the

world’s largest Communist Party, second only to the CCP and

the former Soviet Union.

Then Communist Premier Zhou Enlai once said,

“There are so many overseas Chinese residing in Southeast

Asia, that the Communist regime can export ‘communism’ to change

the color of Southeast Asia overnight.”

Since then, this talk has planted the seeds of rampant

“anti-Chinese” Racism.

Zhong Weiguang, Political scientist: “That the Communist

engaged in revolution and state subversion world wide has been

a public slogan and creed.

At that time, Mao Zedong wanted to lead the world revolution,

and replace the Soviet Union to become the world center of

Communism."

In 1965, an attempted coup by the Indonesian Communist Party

known as the Thirtieth of September Movement took place.

Then Major General Suharto blamed the ICP for the coup and

Suharto-led troops launched nationwide anti-communist purges.

In less than a year, hundreds of thousands of alleged

communists were killed.

Because of the CCP’s involvement in the development of the

ICP and many schools had been infiltrated,

masses of Chinese Indonesians were accused of being CCP agents

and were executed.

Scholars generally believe that at least 300,000 of the

500,000 killed were Chinese.

Zhong Weiguang: “In the 1950s, the CCP exported revolution in

Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

They had provided weapons to guerrilla in Indonesia,

Philippines, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.

The so-called Marxist-Maoist in these countries had also been

regularly trained in China.

The CCP had supported all the insurgency and the Marxist

elements in those countries.

The Indonesian people had naturally developed resentment

against the revolutionary interference from China."

But the fatal sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of overseas

Chinese people did not stop the CCP from exporting revolution

to Southeast Asia.

Unrest fomented by the Communist Party had continued and

tragedy also ensued.

Shocking and appalling anti-Chinese riots took place

between May 13 and May 16 of 1998, resulting in the organized

abuse and mass killing of tens of thousands of Chinese Indonesians.

Tens of thousands of Chinese women were raped, gang-raped

and sexually abused.

It is also known to the Chinese as the Black May Riots.

Mr. Yip, Chinese Indonesian: “The May riots took a lot of lives,

they robbed, they burned shops, and they raped women.

My shop was robbed."

The brutality against the Indonesian of the Black May Riots

shocked the world.

The Chinese community in the world also organized a rally

requesting a stop to the anti-Chinese racism and punish the

perpetrators.

Measures to rescue Indonesian Chinese and accept refugees

have been taken by Taiwan, Singapore, and the United States.

For the “non-interference in the internal affairs of Indonesia,"

policy, the CCP regime made no condemnation or interference.

Then CCP leader Jiang Zemin actually made a secret order:

Ban all media coverage of Indonesian anti-Chinese movement.

The 400 million yuan loans were delivered on schedule and

even encouraged the Indonesia government, while the Chinese

Indonesians seeking help of the Chinese Consulate were rejected.

Wang Dingyin, Chinese Indonesian:

“During that turmoil, a Chinese phoned the consulate and said

we are in such a miserable situation, can’t you help to save us?

It said, no way, you are the Indonesians! “

Zhong Weiguang: “In this case, the interests of the regime and

the CCP are their first consideration.

It does not concern itself with the interests of its people.

The CCP needs those people to stay.

The persecution helps to further intensify local conflicts."

Zhong Weiguang,an expert in totalitarian society research,

warns overseas Chinese who seek refuge in the CCP:

When you are not in line with the interests of the CCP ,

you’ll be abandoned at any time, if not today, it will

be tomorrow."
