The Regime Denied a US Doctor from Visiting Activist Zhu Yufu In Jail

Human rights activist Zhu Yufu was held
in Hangzhou prison, Zhejiang.
Zhu’s health has deteriorated.

His family, along with American Dr. Devra Marcus
and human rights advocate Kody Kness, went to see Zhu.
Dr. Marcus had hoped to give Zhu a medical exam.

However, the prison officers refused to allow them
to see Zhu.
Zhu’s wife says the regime denied their request
to bail Zhu out for medical treatment.
She was very worried about Zhu’s health condition.

On Oct. 12, Marcus and Kness, along with Zhu’s family,
visited Zhu in prison, but were denied.
The prison officers confiscated their passports,
mobile phones, and questioned them.

Sources say that 73-year-old, white-haired Marcus has been
a medical doctor in Washington D.C. for more than 40 years.
On Oct. 8, she and Kness traveled from Washington
to No. 4 Prison in Zhejiang.
She hoped to provide a medical exam for Zhu Yufu.

Before going to China, Marcus had made a video talk
about the reason she’s going to China.
She says this is her first time visiting China.
On behalf of Zhu’s family, she was to see Zhu in prison.
She reminded the public to the pay attention to Zhu’s issue.

Because Zhu has often been denied food
and medicines, he repeatedly fell into comas.
Marcus says that from the sources she obtained, which
shows that Zhu’s life is in danger, he needs medical treatment.
However, Zhu was treated as an enemy by the regime,
and was denied treatment.

Zhu Yufu is 60 years old, he was sentenced to seven years
in jail in Feb. 2012 for the allegations
of “inciting subversion of state power.”

Zhu’s family repeatedly urges the international society
to show concern for Zhu.

Jiang Hangli, wife of Zhu Yufu: “They told me they were
coming to see Zhu.
As she (Marcus) is a doctor, she told prison officers that
she wanted to give Zhu a medical exam.
She negotiated with them for a long time, but they denied her.
They said it was impossible.
We asked prison officers how we could get inside to see Zhu,
they said ‘no way,’ they didn’t allow us to see Zhu.
Zhu is 60, his health condition is poor and declining,
he suffered from high blood pressure as well.
We are really worried.”

Zhu’s wife said they tried hard to bail Zhu out
for medical treatments, but were refused by the regime.

Lv Gengsong, Chinese democrat:
“He is a political prisoner.
They allowed corrupt officials to be bailed out
for medical treatment.
Why cant a political prisoner be?

They certainly covered up secrets, why didn’t hey allow
an American doctor to exam his heath?”

In September, US-based China Aid published an open letter
from Zhu’s sister.
The letter says Zhu’s current health condition
was extremely poor.
He faced terrible mental tortures.

His family was very worried that he would collapse
and be unable to endure repeated mental torture.
The family lodged their strong protest against Zhejiang prison
regarding their treatment of a prisoner of conscience.

Zhu Yufu has long been devoted
to China’s democracy movement.
He was one of the founders of the Democracy Party of China.

Over the past 20 years, Zhu has carried forward
the democracy movement, being repeatedly jailed.
His health has deteriorated.

Chen Shuqing, democrat in Hangzhou, Zhejiang:
“His incarceration is political persecution.
Political prisoners have no human rights protection.
He has faced many threats.
He had been given more life threats
than any general criminal.”

Zhu founded a freedom magazine in 1979.

He participated in, and was one of the founders
of, the Democracy Wall movement in Hangzhou.
In 1989, due to his support of the Tiananmen Students
Protests, his home was raided.
He was detained for 27 days
and dismissed from his job.
In 1998, Zhu actively founded the Democracy Party.

In 1999, he was accused of “inciting subversion
of state power” and was sentenced to seven years in jail.
He has been deprived of political rights for three years.

In 2007, he was sentenced again to two years in jail
for allegations of “hindering public duty.”

In 2011, Zhu was arrested for openly supporting
China’s Jasmine Revolution movement.
He published a poem online entitled, “It’s Time.”

The poem reads,
“It’s time, people of China! It’s time.
The Square belongs to everyone.

With your own two feet
It’s time to head to the Square and make your choice.
It’s time, people of China! It’s time.

A song belongs to everyone.

From your own throat
It’s time to voice the song in your heart.
It’s time, people of China! It’s time.

China belongs to everyone.

Of your own will
It’s time to choose what China shall be.”
