Poll: Chinese are most materialistic

In a recent poll on Global Attitudes on Materialism, Finances
and Family by French market research company, Ipsos,
China tops the materialism list among 16,000 adults
across 20 countries surveyed.

In a new Global Trend Survey conducted by French market
research company, Ipsos, topping the materialism poll
is China, where 71 percent responded yes to the question,
“I measure my success by the things I own."

The data also shows that nearly 80 percent of people oppose
the idea that materials are equal to success in Japan, the U.S.
and Canada, and as many as 93 percent of people
in Sweden oppose the idea.

China also tops the “I feel under a lot of pressure
to be successful and make money" poll with 68 percent
of the people surveyed agreeing with this statement,
which is higher than the global average of 22 percent.

Zhu Xinxin, former editor of Hebei People’s Radio:
“This is a reflection of reality.
Under the current authoritarian regime, the society
is severely unjust, there is severe inequality.
The rich and the privileged amassed huge wealth
and are anxious to collect more."

In the 1980s, with former Communist Party leader
Deng Xiaoping’s statement, “Let some people get rich first,"
the regime leaders and families became the first
to collect wealth and reach tycoon status in China.

During Jiang Zemin’s era, officials further engaged in fortune
grabbing in exchange for providing Jiang political support.
Jiang Zemin, Zeng Qinghong, and Zhou Yongkang have
been the ringleaders of corruption and immorality
in the officialdom, and exercised the dictatorship
against the people.
Every year, several millions of victims have been forced
to become petitioners in China.

Zhu Xinxin: “The reform the regime is engaging in is lame.
It only permits a free economy, which everyone
is occupied with nowadays.
People only care about business, since there is no freedom
in culture and politics."

Former editor of Hebei People’s Radio, Zhu Xinxin,
says that Chinese can only focus on wealth
since the Communist regime restricts everything else.

Furthermore, the Communist regime has brainwashed
the people with atheism and the Chinese no longer hold
any spiritual beliefs.

Zhu Xinxin: “As a result, the Chinese don’t value
the true humanity.
They only believe in the value of money
and believe money is the reality.
Fame and money are the values of the Chinese.
The Chinese have thus become anxious about money
and are completely coerced and swayed by wealth."

In 2012, Committee of 100, an organization focused
on the Chinese-American community, conducted a survey.
When asked about “current personal goals in life",
the majority of Americans choose “to have a happy family",
whereas the majority of Chinese choose “to get rich".

In the “2012-2013 Love and Marriage in Modern China"
survey, 52 percent of women believe home ownership
is a must for marriage.

Former Shandong University professor Sun Wenguang
explains that with more than 60 years of ruling
by the Communist regime, universal values
and moral values have been completely destroyed.
Money and power exceed the law.

Justice, morality, dignity, and humanity are neglected
and are viewed as something exchangeable with money.

Sun Wenguang, former professor of Shandong University:
“The Chinese people have thus become more materialistic.
The spiritual life no longer exists as an ideology.

As for the Communist regime, the so-called good socialist
society has become mere talk."

The Ipsos data also reflects that the Chinese ranked lower
than the world average on the question regarding
“optimism for personal life".

Sun Wenguang: “It is obvious – with so many righteous
people being persecuted and jailed for the past
several decades – naturally people would lack
a sense of security and hope for the future.
Fighting against the regime will only lead to imprisonment.
But then it’s also hard to reconcile not fighting against it."

According to the Ipsos poll, Chinese “respondents are deemed
to be ‘primary engaged citizens’ as they meet minimum
thresholds of education/income and connectivity compared
to their fellow global citizens" in developed countries.
