Wen Not Candid?

Facing the’Jasmine Revolution’effects,
for the 1st time, CCP Premier Wen Jiabao
commented on the issue. He said it is not right
to compare China with the political turmoil
in West Asia and North Africa. Wen’s remarks
have caused wide concerns, and are criticized
by Chinese dissidents as “insincere”.

On March 14, at the press conference
after the’two meetings’, a reporter from
French magazine, Le Point’s, compared China
with recent changes in North Africa, and asked Wen
how China should adapt to this environment?

Wen said that China is very concerned about
the political turmoil in the Middle East
and North Africa. However, he said it is incorrect
to compare China with the countries
where there is political turmoil.

Ex-journalist at Xinhua News, Gao Yu:
“Incorrect to compare? Then why is the entire world
comparing it? When the incident
(Gadhafi’s military crackdown) occurred,
people immediately thought of
the Tiananmen Massacre and the’Chinese model’.
I don’t think Wen is candid on this.”

Democratic waves made CCP authorities
very nervous. In response to the Chinese’Jasmine’
protest rallies, CCP has detained
hundreds of dissidents and activists,
increasing efforts to control the media and internet.
State media issued high-profile criticism
of’street politics’and demonized
the democratic movements in the Middle East
and North Africa as “riots".
CCP’s “stability maintenance" budget in 2010
exceeded national defense budget for the first time.

Gao Yu: “The Chinese compare China to
North Africa. As a Premier, you deny it and say
it is not the same. It is precisely the same.
(CCP’s) stability maintenance is to prevent
the occurrence of’Jasmine Revolutions’in China.”

German newspaper, Neue Zürcher Zeitung,
reported, that Chinese’Jasmine’rallies have
successfully revealed the discontent voices
of the public, which Beijing fears.

The report also said that a poll in China shows
that the majority of Chinese people
consider the information
given by the government to be “largely false”.

Chinese writer, Li Chengpeng, said previously,
“When people lost trust in their government,
they would begin to believe all possible rumors
and conspiracy theories. Even if the officials
tell the truth, people will not believe,
because they have been lied to too much.”

Gao Yu: “The dictatorship has led to corruption.
People took to the streets.
Just like the Tiananmen movement.
Both are peaceful, non-violent and anti-corruption.
Corruption is the most serious problem in China.
Unemployment and unjustness are rampant.
There are millions of petitioners in Beijing alone.
Sometimes even more.”

Scholar Ding Dong at Academy of Social Sciences,
believes that there is little time left for CCP
to regain trust. Once peoples’distrust of CCP
exceeds a certain point,
the situation will become very dangerous,
and any small incident will be sufficient
to trigger social unrest.
