Chinese Communist Party Press Control Stops Publication Of
A Book Revealing The Truth Of The Great Famine

During China’s Great Famine between 1959 and 1962,
many millions of people died of starvation.
Sichuan is one of the provinces suffering terrible depopulation.

Most researchers believe that about 10 to 12 million
were starved to death during the Great Famine.
Yingjing County, located in the middle of Ya’an,
Sichuan even lost half its population.
Last March, the municipal Political Consultative Conference
of Ya’an were prepared to publish documentary evidences
about the Great Famine, but suddenly stopped the plan after
the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) 18th National Congress.
After discussion the raw information was finally published
in Hong Kong as a book titled “The Great Disaster”.
Regrettably, although the authors tried to secretly publish
the book in mainland China they failed to escape the CCP’s strict control over press.

Yingjing County, in the middle of Ya’an area, Sichuan province,
was once an important post on the southern silk route.
It has very good natural resources such as fertile lands,
lush grass and fresh water.
However, the small county was depopulated by half
during the Great Famine between 1959 and 1962.

Last March, the municipal Political Consultative Conference
of Ya’an collected documentary materials about
the Great Famine to publish a book titled
“Historical record of the three year man-made calamity”.
This will provide critical evidences for the CCP Central
Committee to reappraise Mao Zedong.
However, after the 18th National Congress concluded,
party leaders of the county told the writing group that
the plan had been terminated and
the book would be no longer published.

To prevent the historical truth from being concealed,
Tong Ziping, chief editor of the book, decided to publish it at his own expense.
No publisher in Sichuan had the courage to publish the book.
At last, Beijing writer Tieliu contacted a publisher in Hong Kong.
The disaster that happened 53 years ago in Yingjing County
was finally revealed to the public.

Tieliu told NTD that, over 30 million people died of
starvation during the three year long Great Famine.
Some also claim the deaths are over 40 million. In addition, just
in his home province Sichuan, 12.5 million people had died.

Tieliu, Beijing writer: ”My mother died at during
the Great Famine. So did my uncle.
Do you know which county suffered the most in China?
It is Yingjing County in Sichuan.
Yingjing is a very small county, and half of the
120,000 residents died of starvation.
So the book “The Great Disaster” recorded the local stories
during the Great Famine that were told by survivors.
There are many photos and facts revealed in the book.
The survivors came from many backgrounds.
There was a county party secretary, district chiefs of people’s
communes, doctors, directors and commune members.”

Tieliu further said that “The Great Disaster” or any book
revealing historical truth about the CCP will never get a publication license in China.
Only Hong Kong will publish them. However,
Hong Kong publications cannot go through CCP customs.
They decided to secretly publish the book in China mainland.

To safely complete the publication, Tieliu’s friend
not only printed the book at multiple locations,
but also did the cover printing, text printing and
adhesive binding separately.
Every step was carried out secretly.

The publication was still found by CCP cultural agents.

According to Tieliu, 80 sample books mailed from Hong Kong
to Yingjing were also confiscated by police at the post office.

87-year-old Tong Ziping was the first deputy county
governor of Yingjing. He was also a witness of the disaster.
According to his interview in the book, back then the
provincial party secretary Li Jingquan was regarded as a “model” in following the leftist route;
When passing on Mao Zedong’s talk, Li said “the contradiction
between the CCP and peasants is that the party wants to
collect more while the peasants want to eat more”.
The CCP needed to battle with the peasants for crops.

The Party commanded its officials “the demand of crop
collection has to be met even at the cost of human lives”.

Tong Ziping also said that during the famine
he had heard some ate human flesh in the mountains.
That some cut thighs from the body of their dead son to eat.

However, under such a disastrous situation,
what the county leaders did was only block of any information leaking to the outside.
They assigned people to guard the post office and
inspect telegrams and letters.
Militia blocked the way to stop those escaping
to other counties.
They would rather see death of residents
than their escaping the famine!

Tong Ziping remarked that in the past 50 years nobody has
stood out to claim responsibility or apologize for the disaster.
Furthermore, the party always attempted to cover up
the truth and remove the memory from people’s minds.
However, as 53 years passed YIngjing people still could
not forget such a history of blood and tears.

Tong said, the truth is always among the people
and stays in their hearts.
Survivors will tell the story to their children, record
history in writings and spread the truth on the Internet,
to make it an important lesson to the descendants.
