Hong Kong Government Responded To Sudden Occupy Central Start with Toughness

Early on Sunday, Benny Tai Yiu Ting, a founder of the Occupy

Central movement, announced the formal start

of Occupy Central.

His words set off a day of storm in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong police took a tough stance against protesters,

propelling Hong Kong people to respond

with more civil disobedience.

At night, another founder of the movement Chan Kin-man

called on protesters to head home after the police employed

anti-personnel weapons to drive protesters away.

Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) also warned

that they might escalate their activities.

At 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, Benny Tai Yiu Ting, a founder

of the Occupy Central movement, made a surprising

announcement when he visited tens of thousands

of students and democrats outside the government building.

Benny Tai Yiu Ting: “Occupy Central has formally begun.

Occupy Central has formally begun.

Occupy Central has formally begun.”

Benny Tai said that the movement would first

occupy the government headquarters.

He further presented two demands.

Benny Tai Yiu Ting: ”First, we demand withdrawal

of the NPC’s non-democratic and unjust decision

on Hong Kong chief executive election.

Second, we demand a restart to the political reform plan.”

On Sept. 23, Benny Tai wrote on his Facebook wall

that, “While others are celebrating the country’s big day,

we will set up a grand banquet in Central

to fight for Hong Kong’s democracy.”

This was regarded as a signal that Occupy Central

would begin on Oct. 1.

Hong Kong legislative council member Sin Chung-kai

commented on the early start of the movement.

Sin said the decision was made completely according

to situational changes.

Sin Chung-kai, member of Hong Kong legislative council:

“At 9 p.m., they began to discuss the latest situation.

I think after several hours of discussion,

they made the decision and announcement at 1:30 a.m.

So it was the situational change that pushed them

to do that.”

However, when facing a sudden grand banquet

for democracy, the Hong Kong government responded

with pepper spray and tear gas.

Protesters used plastic films, wore goggles or held

umbrellas to protect their eyes from the police attack.

Nicole, a protester: “Civilians and students were defenseless

in making peaceful protests.

They raised their hands when the police appeared.

However, the police suddenly fired tear gas at protesters

and they didn’t expect that.

The police were really bad, nearly as bad

as those Communist Party bandits.”

Apple Daily said that up until 7:10 p.m. on Sunday,

police fired at least seven rounds of tear gas at protesters.

On the other hand, promoters of Occupy Central said about

60,000 people gathered ahead of the government building

at 9:40 p.m.

The number of protesters saw no decrease despite

the police’s violent attack.

It was rumored that some protesters were shot

with rubber bullets.

But this was denied by Hong Kong police at 7:15 p.m.

At 10:40 p.m., a HKFS delegate said the police had made

gun shots although the type of bullet was still unknown.

Ten minutes later, Chan Kin-man also said the police

had employed antipersonnel weapons.

Chan thus called on protesters to retreat temporarily

and said they would not give up.

A protester told NTD that it is true that

the police made threats of opening fire.

Nicole, a protester: “The police held a banner which read,

‘Please leave immediately otherwise we will use tear gas.’

They also said, ‘Please leave otherwise

we will use guns.’

We are doing this for Hong Kong’s future

and for generations to come.

We are seeking justice, public welfare,

and following our conscience.

We did nothing wrong but they fired at us.

I saw guns on TV news.”

Hong Kong government’s toughness has resulted

in further resistance from Hong Kong people.

The same day, HKFS announced the following demands.

First, open Tim Mei Avenue and Citizens Square

to the public for demonstration.

Second, Leung Chun Ying and the three-member

political reform team have to step down.

Third, the NPC has to call off their decision

on the Hong Kong chief executive election.

Fourth, accept nomination from all citizens.

HKFS said if their demands were not responded

to by midnight, they would launch an indefinite student,

worker and merchant strike throughout the entire city.

Sin Chung-kai: “Indeed civil disobedience is what we can do.

It seems that the CCP is hard to move like a monolith.

However, our youths have their passion and dreams.

We support what they are doing without hesitation.”

The early start of Occupy Central has drawn

worldwide attention from media.

However, the CCP mouthpieces have all kept silent

on the incident.

Strict censorship is also applied towards

relevant Weibo messages.

On the other hand, by 9:30 p.m. on Sunday over 120,000

had signed a on White House website petition requesting

the U.S. government to press the CCP in fulfilling its promise

of a real democratic election in Hong Kong.
