Beijing Art Exhibition: Painting for Freedom and Rights

In the outskirts of Beijing, hundreds of Chinese artists have
set up studios, art galleries and exhibitions in the renowned artist village of Song Zhuang.
Song Zhuang’s recent exhibition has caught the public’s eye
for its boldness—using metaphor to depict the collapse of
the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) and mock the regime’s
evil nature, which has stolen the Chinese people’s souls.
The artists’ wisdom and creations have touched
the sensitiveness of the CCP and have caused the authorities headaches now and then.

Several art exhibitions were recently held in Song Zhuang—
the boldness of some works brought compelling results.

The oil painting, “The Downfall of Tiananmen" shows
the central Tiananmen Gate Tower immersed half into water with a man desperately swimming for survival.

Artist Zhu Keming interprets that the Tiananmen Tower
in the picture symbolizes the CCP regime.

Zhu Keming: " Tiananmen Tower being trapped by
the flood water means the arrival of the regime’s demise.
In this picture, if we imagine that the water keeps rising,
the regime won’t exist.
The vanishing of Tiananmen Tower implies the same fate
for the evil CCP regime.
The swimming man is alerting the public to quickly escape
from this dangerous section.”

Several brave petitioners took photos in front of
the Tiananmen Tower painting.

The series, “Not a Soul in Sight”—painted by an artist known
as ‘Soul-seeking’—portrayed people without heads or feet,
walking on the streets wearing school or prison uniforms.

Performance art, “Barbed Wire Covered with Mouth-Muffles"
alluded to the CCP’s banning of free speech.

Liao Dayuan (painter): “I find these paintings very interesting
because the artists very truly depict the real world in China."
The painting “Not a Soul in Sight” shows headless people—
it’s telling us that under the CCP’s high-handed ruling,
people have become soulless, without freedom of thought—
just like walking corpses."

Liao Dayuan says the CCP’s tyranny strangled all channels
for people to express their longing for freedom.

Liao Dayuan: “All overt and dignified expression of one’s
longing for freedom are blocked; it’s stifling.
That motivates artists to develop their wisdom in producing
more powerful and profound works.
The CCP has always killed people in the name of revolution;
stifling freedom and human rights in the name of stability.
Now Chinese artists—in the name of art—are expressing
their thirst for freedom, human rights and democracy, to break through the CCP’s blockade.”

Art exhibitions in Song Zhuang have triggered political
events in the past, for their bold and creative expression.

In early 2011, the Jasmine Revolution in the Middle East
affected mainland China.
Officials cracked down and detained artists for the exhibition
“Burying the Jasmine”, which had caused quite a sensation.

Among the artists detained, painter Soul-seeking was held
for 1 month for his work ‘Hang Oneself With The Party Flag’.

Authorities have since been closely scrutinizing the
exhibitions in Song Zhuang.

The wide spread discontent and fury over the CCP’s ruling
has spread over the whole country, says Zhu Keming.
The appearance of such an expression of art reflects the
extent of the evil which the CCP has imposed on China says.

Zhu Keming: “Chinese people are very talented and wise.
No matter how the regime blocks them,
it cannot really succeed in sealing off the civilians’
dissatisfaction with its ruling and its evil nature.
There is a saying in China, “Water can float your boat,
it can also sink it."
When everyone agrees to remove the regime,
thinking it an absolute evil and useless,
and outraging what it has done,
the regime will really be doomed! “

The painting, “A Plane Heading For the Statue of Liberty",
sparked visitors’ discussion.
It expresses the Chinese’s sincere and urgent desire
for freedom.
