“Remind The U.S. That It Owes China”

U.S. Ambassador to China, Gary Locke, flew to the
Davos Economic Forum in Dalian in Economy Class.
A CCTV reporter asked him if he is been so frugal as to
remind Americans that they owe China money?
Locke responded that this is the American standard.
Chinese netizens bombarded the CCTV reporter saying,
”Why don’t you dare remind Chinese officials
that they owe Chinese people money?”

During the Summer Davos Economic Forum held in Dalian
on September 14, the U.S. Ambassador to China continued his exemplary style by flying Economy Class.
At the forum, CCTV economic channel host
Rui Chenggang asked Locke,
“Mr. Ambassador, I heard you flew here in Economy Class,
is this to remind the U.S. that it owes China money?”
Locke responded that the U.S. government will continue
to reduce expenditure to restore people’s trust
in the government, and taking the Economy Class
is to prove this point.

During the media round table afterward, Locke expressed
that no matter if it is the U.S. Ambassador
or embassy officials, including people in the president’s
cabinet, the common standard is to take Economy Class.

Locke expressed that he is a very easygoing person,
which represents the true American way.
He hoped that his openness can improve mutual
understanding between the American and Chinese people,
eliminate some barriers and misunderstandings,
despite the economical, political and culture differences.

Rui Chenggang said on her micro-blog later that Locke
takes every opportunity to promote American values.

Scholar at Chinese Art Institute, Wu Zuolai, expressed
how American officials shows their dutiful and friendly spirit through their daily actions;
this is the natural expression of American values.

Wu Zuolai: “Gold shines no matter where it is.
If you say gold shines because it’s doing it on purpose,
then you can believe whatever you want.
He simply has these qualities.
His actions follow the American values.
He himself is a kind of advertisement.
Mao Zedong once said, ‘Every American soldier in China
is a promotion of democracy and freedom.’”

Chinese poet and culture commentator Ye Kuangzheng
pointed out that Chinese citizens really welcome Locke’s frugal and dutiful actions.
Only officials are ridiculing,
or people like Rui Chenggang who represent those in power.

Ye Kuangzheng: “Hosts like Rui Chenggang have political
mindsets, or spokesperson mindsets for those in power.
They are loudspeakers that can’t express personal
viewpoints. They only represent those in power.”

At the G20 Summit last year, Rui Chenggang claimed to
“represent Asia,” and questioned U.S. President Obama.
This time he “represented China,” and attempted to ask
challenging questions.
However, netizens didn’t appear to fancy this,
pointing out this CCTV host’s ignorance.

Li Chengpeng (writer): “I hope Rui Chenggang asks
Chinese officials, ‘You travel in First Class,
is this to remind yourself how much
you have taken from the (Chinese) people?’”

Another netizen compared Rui Chenggang
to the foolish and cynical patriotic youths:
“Full of pride when you brag about anti-Americanism, but
complete cowards when talking about things in front of you.
You know that even if you curse at the U.S. all day,
nothing will happen to you.
You can give Locke and Obama a hard time,
and there will be no retaliation on their part,
but if you do the same to someone next to you,
you might lose your job.”

Other netizens mock the Chinese regime,
”Americans want to study Leifeng, you should let them.

You are pretty good at learning from Song Dynasty officials,
who destroyed the country.”
