Report on Jiang’s Death Caused a Big Stir at ATV

Hong Kong Asia TV (ATV)’s report on July 6
on Jiang Zemin’s death is still causing repercussions.
Senior vice president of ATV’s Department of News
Leung Ka-Wing, announced his resignation on September 5,
effective immediately. The Department’s Vice President
Tammy Tam also handed in his resignation.
The media professional points out that
with the mainland capital being invested in ATV,
putting its news department under mainland control
is right around the corner. Some media professionals
think that it is more worrisome that Hong Kong began to
follow Beijing’s practice of manipulating public opinion.

Leung Ka-Wing said “I had no ability to stop
this news’ publishing.”
The remarks targeted an investigation into investor
Wang Zheng’s involvement in the News Department.
Leung Ka-Wing delivered the letter of resignation to
the management two days after the broadcast.
ATV’s management did not want to keep him.

On September 5, ATV issued a statement saying that
Vice President Liu Lanchang would succeed Liang as SVP.
Liang’s remarks correspond to the feeling of staff members
in the News Department.
The source of the message of Jiang’s death
came from ATV’s major shareholder Wang Zheng.
It was Wang that insisted upon broadcasting the news.

However, later Wang said publicly that he didn’t know
about the news until he watched the TV report.
Wang’s remarks infuriated the staff in the news department.

According to Hong Kong media reports,

Wang Zheng is the descendant of Sheng Xuanhuai,
a renowned political entrepreneur in Chinese modern history.
Wang’s mother Wang Yunfei is the cousin of
Jiang Zemin’s wife Wang Yeping.
Wang Zheng, a Shanghai-based real estate tycoon,
was lionized by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
When Wang announced to buy shares of ATV, he gained
joint support from five major state-owned enterprises.
According to Hong Kong’s Ming Pao report, there are rumors
within the Dept. of News at ATV about Liu Lanchang,
the new SVP and head of the news department.
Liu was a graduate of China’s Renmin University.
Behind him is Cheng Yizhong.
Cheng is ex Editor-in-Chief of Southern Metropolis Daily.
Since Cheng is not a Hong Kong resident, he will assist Liu
as his consultant.
Ming Pao reported that similar to ATV’s management,

where Hong Kong people have managerial titles,
while mainland Chinese people manage behind the scene,
the news department has begun to follow suit.

However, the aftermath of ATV’s erroneous report lingers on.

The Broadcasting Authority of Hong Kong began to
investigate Wang Zheng’s role at ATV.
Hong Kong Legislative Council
also got involved in the issue.
Hong Kong’s famous commentator Ching Cheong said that
the future direction of ATV is still unknown,
but Hong Kong authorities have begun to guide public opinion,
a practice of CCP authorities; that is a real worry.
Ching Cheong: “During the visit of Li Keqiang to Hong Kong,
Hong Kong government began to carry out a new practice.
Information Services Department began releasing news and
photo clips to journalists for news reports.
Such a practice is very unusual.

Director of Administration Mr. Henry Tang expressed that
this practice would become the model of the future.
That is to set up a Central Propaganda Department
in Hong Kong. This is worthy of attention.”
During Li Keqiang’s recent visit to Hong Kong,

a large number of police forces mobilized to block the
masses from coming close to him at various locations.
Journalists complained that the police limited their
freedom of press.
During Li’s visit to Hong Kong University, the police
implemented a comprehensive blockade at the main campus.
Ching Cheong said that Hong Kong people are sensitive
to and concerned about freedom.
So, the authorities’suppression will trigger
a very strong backlash.
Ching Cheong: “Hong Kong residents did well.
They went out to fight against the authorities’ wrongdoing.
I think that this turned bad things into something good.

The bad thing is the authorities’ stepping up control.
However, Hong Kong people rallied immediately.
This was a very forceful action. It sent a clear message to
Hong Kong authorities and the Beijing regime that
Hong Kong people are very concerned when
their original freedom is restricted or denied.
In reality, Hong Kong government’s behaviors during Li’s
visit have been protested by the local people all along.
