The “Five Stripes” Irony

Thirteen year old Huang Yibo from Wuhan City
became famous overnight. The “Five Stripes" rank
on his arm have made him a hot topic online.
“Five Stripes” are a commander rank in the CCP’s
(Chinese Communist Party’s) Young Pioneers.
Caogen.com released a video, “I am a Five Stripes”
on its online program “Emperor Is Pleased,”
as a bitter criticism to CCP’s concept of power
and its impact on young people.

“I am a Five Stripes,” the boy of five stripes.
I am the King of the Young Pioneers. Why is that?
Because I have a domineering comrade look.”

The main character of the 3 minute program
“I am a Five Stripes” is Huang Yibo, deputy chief
of the Wuhan City Young Pioneers’ team.
The story of Huang has turned into a hot topic,
attracting attention to children’s education,
and criticism from the media on CCP’s culture.

In the video, Huang Yibo killed Osama Bin Laden,
and was welcomed by U.S. President Barack Obama,
followed by the irony of how Huang watched CCTV
news since age 2 and reads People’s Daily since age 7.
It shows him smiling and standing like CCP official.
On almost each scene are the “Five Stripes” seen.

China’s writer Han Han published on his blog
the article “Huang Yibo Is A Good Cadre", stating:
“Yibo is naive. He believes CCTV’s news
and People’s Daily. But the problem is
the leaders themselves do not believe these news.”
Han Han predicts Huang Yibo will be excluded
from the officials’ circle in the future,
because he will stand out among those
who do not believe in this news,
and who only use their positions to get benefits.
Han Han’s article was removed from his blog
on sina.com and other sites.

“The Stripes on the sign of his arm are so bright…”

Radio France Internationale’s (RFI) article states
that there is no “Five Stripes” rank.
It was only created by Wuhan City’s
Young Pioneers Committee. It shows
the Red Guards’ psychology and the deep impact
of CCP’s bureaucratic culture on people.

Recently, the National Young Pioneers Committee
issued a statement saying they never issued
the “Five Stripes” rank. Regarding this statement,
Han Han said in this blog that he was sad for Huang,
who has done so much and even stands
like a leader of the central government,
to be just an experimental product in Wuhan City.

RFI thinks the impact of CCP culture on kids
is too dangerous. Doraemon’s treasure chest
might be a better option for innocent kids.

Media criticized the “Five Stripes” phenomena, but
the sign has become very popular among students.
According to Mainland China’s media,
the “Five Stripes” sign is a hot item on the market,
sold at about RMB10.

“Since they dare to show off like this,
they are not afraid of looking silly.
A young child acting like an official,
where will such childhood take him in the future?
The innocence of a child is replaced
by the look of a communist official.
In the name of what? Money and power?”
