Mountain Cave Living VS One Child Policy

A story in Confucius’ Analects says,
due to a harsh government, a woman chose to live
in the mountain even after she lost her family to tigers.
Confucius lamented that tyranny is worse than tigers.
In China, a farmer family from Henan Province lives
in the mountain just to escape the “one child policy".

Yuan Tieming, a farmer from Hunan, and his family
have lived in a mountain cave for 12 years,
to give birth to a son under the “one child policy".
The media in China called them super birth guerrillas.

Yuan and his wife moved here from their hometown.
They had 5 more daughters here.
Due to financial hardship, 2 years ago,
Yuan gave their youngest daughter to a relative.
However, he was arrested for human trafficking,
because he had received some money from the relative.
He was released after paying RMB 3,500.
Now Yuan is waiting for a trial.

Chinese media called Yuan’s behavior ridiculous.
Netizens also expressed their various opinions.
One said, Yuan is ignorant for being “patriarchal" and
having the mentality of “raising children for old age".
Another said, the poor deserve to die.
However, many expressed their understanding.

A netizen that knows about China’s rural life said:
Peasants need to work for 4 years to pay RMB 3,500.
If you have no rural experience, say no foolish remarks.
Villagers’ daughters leave them after getting married.
Without a son, one has no grandchildren.
That kind of sadness is beyond anyone’s imagination.

Some said bluntly: “tyranny is worse than tigers",
“China is the only country practicing birth planning".

A netizen said, to make changes in a traditional society,
the government needs to care for the rural elderly.
No one cares about the poor. No one likes to be poor.
However, the officials have done little for the poor.

Another pointed out: The key is to protect the farmers.
Raising children to provide for old age and
saving for a rainy day are ingrained thoughts.
Problems like regional culture and discrimination
are derived from a society lacking mutual trust and love.

After reading these comments, one has to wonder:
Are farmers ridiculous or pathetic?
Which is ridiculous, the one child policy or the farmer?
