Renowned Dissident Guo Feixiong Arrested

Renowned Guangzhou rights activist,
Guo Feixiong, has been detained by local police.
The news was confirmed after having disappeared.
Prior to this, local police had warned the arrest of Guo.
This came after the arrest of
Xu Zhiyong, a Beijing legal activist.
Analysts say that Guo Feixiong is known
as a renowned dissident in China.
His arrest may be a part of a nationwide
crackdown by the Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) against the “New Citizens’ Movement.

On August 17, Guo Feixiong’s elder sister told media that
she had been informed by Guangzhou police authorities.
A police notice says that Guo Feixiong
had been detained on August 8.
This was on a charge of “gathering
people to disturb public order “.

An international human rights report released
in July shows that since March, the CCP
authorities has arrested a total of 24 dissidents.
In July, they arrested Beijing legal activist
Xu Zhiyong, severely suppressing his supporters.
At that time, there were rumors saying
that Guo Feixiong would be the next target.

Hu Jia, Beijing rights activist: “Both Guo Feixiong
and Xu Zhiyong are the most typical of the rights
activists who have been arrested this year.
The crackdown on them indicates an upgrade by the
authorities’ threat against public campaigns around China.”

Hu Jia says that the public campaign for a mass
street action will eventually arouse public attention.
It will ignite civilians’ long-term discontentment,
or it will incite a revolution against the CCP.
That is why the CCP has always repressed
and has guarded against this the most.

Hu Jia: “What can really lead to a revolution
in China doesn’t merely rely on those articles.
Rather, it is usually driven by those
organized mass street actions.”

When Guo Feixiong suffered a cross-provincial police
kidnapping in June, Guangzhou police openly said that
Guo would be the next, after the arrest of Xu Zhiyong.
This forced Guo to hire two lawyers in advance.
Both lawyers are due to meet Guo in detention.

Sui Muqing, Guo Feixiong’s attorney: “I don’t
think the situation will continue as such.
I still prudently expect that he may be released soon.”

Lawyer Sui tells NTD that Guo’s arrest might
be due to his street speech for the Southern
Weekly in the beginning of 2013.
After that, Guo initiated a plea urging the
CCP authorities to ratify the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Besides, Guo has actively promoted
CCP officials asset declarations.

Guo Feixiong’s arrest has provoked widespread
condemnation in China and overseas.
The international community has initiated a rescue operation.

Zhu Rikun, Promoter, Release Guo Feixiong:
“Why did the authorities arrest him?
It’s obviously related to his pro-democracy activities.

We don’t know the exact reason yet, but
the current accusation on him is untenable.”

Guo Feixiong graduated from Shanghai
East China Normal University in 1988.
His rights defense activities started in 2003.

He, along with Gao Zhisheng, among others, helped
promote the rise of the rights defense movement in China.
In 2007, Guo Feixiong was given a false charge of
“illegal business practices” and jailed for five years.

Hu Jia: “At that time, Guo Feixiong’s case was
directly related to the arrest of lawyer Gao Zhisheng.
The authorities used Guo’s case to deter
the outside world from rescuing lawyer Gao.”

Gao Zhisheng was rated as
China’s top ten “honor lawyers”.
In 2004-05, Gao wrote three open letters requesting that
CCP top-level leaders stop the persecution of Falun Gong.
His righteousness won him the
sobriquet; “Conscience of China".
In December 2006, the CCP authorities charged
him with “inciting subversion of state power”.
Gao was sentenced to three years in prison,
with a five year suspended sentence.
Currently, lawyer Gao is still being
detained in Shaya Prison, Xinjiang.

Reportedly, at the US-China human rights dialogue
held in July, the US specifically raised the cases
of Xu Zhiyong, Gao Zhisheng, and Ni Yulan.
The US expressed concerns over Chinese
citizens’ deprivation of civil rights.
On August 8, the U.S. State Department
again called on the CCP authorities to
immediately release jailed Xu Zhiyong.
