Global Times Chief Editor Refused To Help Colleagues

Recently, Global Times English writer, Zhang Zhilong asked
for help from Chinese Business News, but was refused.
The incident triggered wide controversy online.

Global Times is under the umbrella of the state-owned Media,
People’s Daily.
Netizens said it is a “fifty cent” newspaper used
for praising the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The commentators said that this incident manifested that
the people aren’t happy with officials’ propaganda.
Global Times chief editor, Hu Xijin replied with an open letter.

Hu didn’t support his reporter, and talked about self-confidence.
Netizens laughed and called Hu a “chameleon”.

Global Times reporter, Zhang Zhilong’s parents
were hit by a car in Yan’an.
Zhang suspected the traffic police handled it incorrectly.

Being a family member of a victim, Zhang contacted Wang Wai,
a local reporter in Chinese Business News to report the incident.
After Wang Wai knew who Zhang Zhilong was he refused Zhang.

On May 28, Zhang posted on his microblog that the
other side were concerned about his work at Global Times.
He said that he hopes Wang Wai can abandon the
ideological struggle, and consider the suffering of others.
Wang Wai posted that what he said wasn’t pointing to
Zhang personally, but to the Global Times.
Wang suggested Zhang quit his job and find another one.

The interactive controversy drew the concern of netizens,
and the event caused over 70,000 discussions.
There are also polls, and the majority supported Wang Wai.

Zan Aizong, reporter for China Oceanol newspaper: “To judge
if an event has news value, depends on the media’s decisions.
If there is no news value, the media may not want to report it,
they are free to choose.
However, the Global Times always praises the CCP,
using all its energy to promote patriotism,
Nationalism, Dream of strong country and China Dream.
This caused public resentment.
So, if the Global Times reporter complains,
people will laugh at him;
His own media couldn’t have justice,
or maintain the human rights.”

On May 30, Zhang Zhilong posted on microblog: “At work,
I am a reporter; Outside work, I am an ordinary person.
When I retuned to my hometown, I walked on yellow soil,
listening to native dialect and looking at apples trees.
At this moment, I am spending time with my family,
and that makes me very ordinary.”

Zhu Xinxin, a former editor at Hebei Radio Station said that

in netizens’ and readers’ eyes,
the Global Times is like a loyal dog of the CCP.
Because of its bad reputation, the reporters
were also affected.

Zhu Xinxin: “If there is not a big problem, it is understandable
for people working in the same industry to help each other.
Once they know it is a reporter from the Global Times,
they didn’t care what’s happened to this reporter.
It is inevitable for them to show their disgust towards
the Global Times.
So, they don’t offer their help. This reflects that
the CCP suppresses the peoples’ opinions.”

On the evening of May 28, Wang Wai responded to
Zhang on microblog: “I can’t involve with your family issue,
Firstly, the Global Times always makes other people suffer,
now it is your turn. You ought to talk to your brother (chief editor) Hu Xijin.
Secondly, from the viewpoint of expertise, there’s no evidence
of the car incident, we can’t only listen to your side.”

On May 29, the Global Times chief editor Hu Xijin
posted responses.
Hu didn’t show any help for Zhang, but highlighted
the scale of the Global Times’ website.
He also said “self-confidence will cultivate one’s self-restraint.”

In this regard, a netizen@wangxiaoyu-at-seaside posted:
“Editor-in-chief, Hu is a real Communist Party member.
His colleague’s family member was hit by a car and
wanted help, but was refused.
Hu not only didn’t care about his colleague, but was talking
about the circulation of the newspaper instead.
Is this a Yin-Yang face or a chameleon?
Does editor Hu want to fool the whole world?”

Zhu Xinxin: “This incident told us:
the Chinese people have awakened.
It isn’t as if you have power with officials’ or CCP protection,
so you can do whatever you like. It is not that era any more.
The state-owned media becomes less credible, being
marginalized. The civil opinion becomes the major trend.
This is a historical trend. Righteous is over the evil.
No one can prevent the trend from going forward.”

Zhu Xinxin urges that people in the media industry who hold
up the CCP’s stance, don’t just look at the immediate interests.
One should have a far-reaching view, to be responsible
for himself, for the history and for the public.
Otherwise, they will remain infamous in history.
