China』s Global News Criticises Locke』s Lifestyle in China

The Global Times (GT), which operates in China
under the umbrella of the People』s Daily,
a Chinese Communist Party (CCP), mouthpiece,
slammed American ambassador, Gary Locke,
saying he shouldn』t use “clever ways” to influence
public opinion in China.
GT』s comment caused a stir among netizens and various media,
with some commentators saying that GT is playing a wrong role.
The public can see Locke』s probity,
which is in sharp contrast to China』s corrupt officials.
CCP officials lack the ability to self-examine themselves,
and as a result, they do not cater to the needs of the people.

GT published an article on September 22 criticizing Locke’s
every move.
The media spoke of him as a “clean” official and held Locke up
as a mirror for China』s officials.

Academy of Social Sciences Institute professor,
Lei Yi, said that GT places itself in the wrong role.

Lei: “If I had written this article, the important thing for me,
as an historian and sociologist, is to study the reason
why Locke』s manner is causing such a big stir,
which proves that people expecting officials to be “clean.”
If Locke』s personal lifestyle is commonplace among
China』s official, no one would think about reporting on it…”

GT said that “Fever for Locke” is possibly a “new misson”
of the American embassy, with some journalists romanticizing
the situation out of lack of knowledge of foreign diplomacy.

If a foreign ambassador is over-praised, particularly when
he occupies a post in China, things can get rather complicated.

China Insurance newspaper』s chief editor, Tong Dahuan,
commented, saying, “Civilians praise Locke and he is respected.
GT should prove that Locke』s complication interferes
in China』s domestic affairs,

then they will have the evidence to dismiss him through proper
foreign diplomatic channels. If GT has evidence, they should be able to do this, right?”

Former China Youth newspaper editor
and former Oriental Morning Post commentator,
Tong Dahuan, believes that GT is too narrow-minded
for considering Locke』s normal way of life as a “show.”

Tong: “Chinese people see Locke as very clean, wow he is honest,
so plain and natural!
Comparing him to our officials, the “three consumptions”
of CCP officials is everywhere, and they』ve never been publicised.
People naturally compare one person to another;
this is their right.
If Locke didn』t have Chinese roots, unlike most U.S ambassadors,
we Chinese might not be so concerned.
GT made a big fuss about his personal life.
Doesn』t that mean that they are interfering in his private life?”

GT wrote, “Instead of using “clever ways” to interfere
in China』s media, thus fostering new misunderstandings
and suspicions along the way, a U.S. ambassador
should devote himself to improving the relationship between China and the United States,
thereby eliminating misunderstandings rather than playing
a controversy role in Chinese media.”

Tong Dahuan: “Isn』t it one of the basic tenents of the media
to tell the truth, or does it exist to stir up nationalist sentiments?
Shouldn』t it help to develop society, and improve
government transparency and ethics?”

GT』s article was criticised by netizens and some media.
Hong Kong Apple Daily reported on September 23 that
CCP officials didn』t check their devilish behavior,
instead, they pointed fingers at each other.
This shows a lack of understanding on the part of CCP officials,
demonstrating that they lack the ability to self-examine themselves.
This is why they』re out of touch with
Chinese citizens』 needs.
