Red Cross Executive Criticized for Showing Off

A girl named Guo Meimei recently showed off
her wealth on micro-blogs and caused an uproar.
Many incidents of corruption have been exposed.
Many officials and celebrities are implicated.
China Red Cross is facing a crisis of confidence,
but it fails to offer the public a sound explanation.

The protagonist in the video is a 20-year-old,
who claims to live in a mansion and drives a Maserati.
On June 23, she bragged about owning a dozen Hermes.
She is a commerce general manager at China Red Cross,
as per her verified identity by Sina.com Micro-blog.

A self-proclaimed GM of Red Cross is so wealthy!
The news caused a stir in the online community,
and drew anger and doubts from netizens, who ask,
What happened to the donations to Red Cross?

Amidst the questions and doubts, Guo apologized for
her fabricated identity and her “foolish behavior”.
Sina declared to have identified Guo to be an actress.

Hong Kong’s Mirror Illustrated asked these questions:
Among all names, why chose “Red Cross Commerce”?
If you have nothing to do with this place,
how did its name come to your mind?

China Red Cross Society issued four statements
to clear its name and to reserve its rights to
further investigate this incident and its perpetrator.

Chinese independent reporter Zhou Shuguang:
“The Red Cross announced to investigate the incident.
However, why doesn’t it do an investigation of Guo?”
The media find the incident suspicious.
Red Cross’s explanation is not reasonable.
It can only “claim” rather than “prove”.

Zhou Shuguang: “Denial alone is not good enough.
The many connections between Guo, her sponsors
and the Red Cross need to be explained.
How can they solicit donations in Red Cross’s name?

Now the Guo Meimei incident has been exposed,
it is possible that corruption exists in Red Cross.
Thus, the organization should be made transparent.

Chinese Academy of Social Sciences scholar
Yu Jianrong wrote on micro-blog:
“As long as it is not transparent, I don’t donate.”
He believes that this incident shows people’s anger
towards an opaque bureaucratization of Red Cross.
Also, when facing a confidence crisis
Red Cross is unable to offer a sound explanation.

Yangzhou Evening News commented that
although many people had showed off their wealth,
Guo is the first who fails to step on the brake in time.

Chinese netizens’ further investigation has triggered
a chain reaction and exposed a corruption chain.
Many officials and celebrities are implicated.
Thus, Chinese netizens have initiated
a civilian “anti-corruption” movement.

Zhou: Many may view it as a political act
for citizens to attack officials’ corruption.
However, if we focus on a nominal NGO,
the pressure would be much smaller.
That is why many people keep on asking questions.

Well-known host at Phoenix TV, Yang Lan,
tried to help clear Red Cross’s name.
However, she invited suspicion for
being a co-creator of a “fabricated donation gate”.
Even after she issued a statement to claim innocence,
netizens still wouldn’t believe her.

Anti-corruption volunteer Zhang Jianzhong:
The authorities have lost their credibility among people.
Where did donations for the Sichuan Earthquake go?
The distribution of donations is never made public.
Netizens also question the whereabouts of the money.
Some people are playing hide and seek with us.

Guo’s flight arrived in Beijing on June 27.
Some believe that Guo may move or go abroad.
The central figure of the Guo Meimei incident
may disappear mysteriously from the public view.
