Confucius Statue Removed from Tian Anmen

A Confucius statue erected on Tian Anmen Square
in January disappeared a few days ago.
Various media made inquiries, and discovered
the status was moved in the National Museum.
Why did the Chinese authority erect the statue?
Why was it removed?

The Confucius statue was finished in January,
placed on the east side of Tian Anmen Square,
to the north of the National Museum.
On April 21, the 9.5-meter high statue
was removed, its site blocked by blue boards.

Staff from National Museum confirmed that
the statue was moved to the sculpture room
in the northwest part of the museum.
Few people visit this part of the museum.
From outside the museum to the inside,
the statue stayed on the Square for 100 days.

The statue drew attention from the beginning.
Hong Kong based Oriental Daily said
Mao’s memorial and photo have been
on Tian Anmen Square.
Mao was against Confucius,
and mobilized a criticism against him.
Netizen call it “two enemies on the same square.”

According to Oriental Daily, some scholars
Suspect the authority wants to use Confucius
to re-establish society’s morality.
But setting a statue is only superficial.

According to Tie Liu, a well-known writer,
the communist party criticized Confucius before
to achieve its political and cultural goals.
Now the party digs up Confucius, wanting
to use him to achieve its “harmonious society.”

Tie Liu: “From May 4th to criticism
against Confucius and Cultural Revolution –
all movements knocked down Confucius
in the name of rebellion or revolution.
The Chinese [regime] doesn’t care for
benevolence, morality, loyalty or filial piety.
Communism did not work, now they dig out
Confucius, [using him to] preach morality.

After the Confucius statue was erected,
many people took photos of it, and
teachers and students presented flowers to it.
People old or young from different walks of life
said Confucius statue arouses their desire
to revive the Chinese cultural tradition.

Tie Liu: “But opposition came from Mao followers.
Mao on one side, Confucius on the other side
of the Square, like ice and fire, water and fire.
It does not work, and Mao won.
Confucius was moved inside.”

China expert Hu Xingdou said to Oriental Daily,
this shows Chinese authority’s chaotic values.
Chongqing city is promoting revolutionary songs,
which is going backward, said Tie Liu.
Tie said only democracy and law can help
resolve social problems in China.
