Power Grabbing Before the National People’s Congress

Beijing recently held the Sixth Plenary Session of
the 17th Central Committee , which is the last important meeting
before deciding the next generation of Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) leadership. Surprisingly, the main topic of this plenary session
was cultural reform. It’s obviously that the cultural issue will stay
within the scope of the regime’s official propaganda,
that is, it will stay within the boundaries of ideological control and
Internet censorship. But traditionally, the main topic of this meeting
centers on power struggles among the different CCP leaders.

The French newspaper, Le Figaro, commented that
the main point of the Sixth Plenary Session was to decide who
would be appointed to the top positions in the regime,
especially the nine positions in the Central Politburo Committee.
The increasingly heated power struggles involve the 370 highest
ranked members of the CCP.

Political commentator, Lin Baohua: “While they don’t talk about
personnel arrangements, that’s the main concern each time.
But personnel arrangements have already passed the battle phase.
Under the banner of commemorating the 100th anniversary of
the Xinhai Revolution, Jiang Zemin came out of hiding.
One week later, the Sixth Plenary Session was held.
The thing is, one year from now, the Central Committee will be held.
So what will happen during this current year?
How will Jiang’s health change? Everyone is trying to predict this.”

Bo Xilai, a Jiang Zemin faction member and CCP secretary of
Chongqing City, promoted movements such as
Singing Communist Revolutionary Songs,
in the hopes of forging a reputation as a leader of the “Red Culture.”
Therefore, he is a major contender in this power struggle.

China Affairs expert, Zhao Yuanming, believes that
Bo Xilai is definitely a descendent of red culture, and wants to prove his influence.

Zhao: “The second is to continue to control people’s thoughts,
crack down on nationalist ideology, then rebuild dictatorial rule;
confuse the masses, then praise himself,
just to make people follow him.
The third is to fortify the CCP’s ruling position in China.”

Zhao believes, whether it is in China or abroad,
singing red songs is definitely going against history.

Zhao: “Regarding singing red songs,
this red has been cast aside by history.
Looking at the Cultural Revolution, in the areas of politics,
culture, economy, social order, and morality, it virtually destroyed China.
The Cultural Revolution brought irreversible damage
to the Chinese people.”

Before the transfer of power, the CCP’s meeting
regarding cultural reform was surprising,
however, Le Figaro said that the cultural reform issue
has directly related everything to the CCP ideology.

Lin Baohua: “The Sixth Plenary Session stated that
Chinese culture needs to prosper and expand,
which I think is laughable.
I think it’s using this slogan to achieve its goal:
to control people’s minds.
The CCP always uses fake slogans to deceive the masses.”

The Le Figaro article pointed out that the CCP’s cultural theme
also contains information and propaganda..
Recently, Beijing realized the danger of losing control of its media.
For that reason, micro-blogs are now strictly censored.
In addition, the global phenomenon of “Occupy Wall Street”
has been strictly prohibited in China.

Zhao Yuanming: “Right now, universal values and
other personal freedoms are accepted world-wide.
Various countries, including some Middle Eastern countries
have overthrown longstanding dictatorships, which has now
formed a sort of movement.
The CCP rulers are very afraid of this movement and
are worried that this wave will hit mainland China.”

Zhao Yuanming predicts that the 18th National People’s Congress
will continue to suppress people’s call for freedom and democracy,
as it is not sincerely ready for political reform.
