CCTV Restyling, Public Not Optimistic

The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) official media, CCTV,
recently revealed that it will revise its news programs
starting next year. Various different types of reporting
will be added to the programs
and the overall tone of the programs will change as well.
While CCTV seems confident about the change,
public reaction has been relatively cold; many expressed
that they won’t watch CCTV even after the change.

Mainland media reported that CCTV held its 2012 program
promotion meeting on September 20, revealing its changes.
The ‘News Feed’ program will relocate
with major changes to its overall packaging,
the overall tone of the program will change as well.
Various new types of reports will be added,
including an increase in a so called public opinion report
in the ‘Focus Talk’ program.

Zan Zizong (Zhejian Author): “I rarely watch ‘News Feed’
and ‘Focus Talk’ because I don’t think its news;
it’s propaganda, not worth watching. I won’t watch even
after the revisions, I can get all the information online,
whether it changes or not does not affect me much.
‘News Feed’ and ‘Focus Talk’ pretty much don’t exist for me,
they won’t do much even if they do exist.
As for reporting public opinion, it’s a propaganda program,
so there is no public opinion associated with it.”

Netizen Long Minfei wrote on BBC’s China’s blog that CCTV
has already restyled many times, the first time being in 2009,
then it tried to attract younger audience in 2010 but failed.
The article also said that, in the eye of the public,
the ‘News Feed’ program has three parts: the first ten
minutes reports on how “busy” all CCP leaders are;
the second ten minutes are used to express how “happy”
everyone in China is;
and the last ten minutes stress on the hard life
and suffering of everyone else in the world.

Li Heping (Human rights lawyer, Beijing): “I haven’t had
a TV set since 2005 because CCTV’s quality is very poor.
It’s hard to watch because it’s fake, exaggerated, and lacks
substance. What happens if it’s restyled?
If it can’t tell the truth, can’t be the common people’s
voice, people will abandon it, they won’t watch it.”

In 2009, Teng Biao, Zan Aizong and 20 other Chinese
scholars and lawyers wrote an open letter criticizing CCTV
for seven different crimes, including advertising that the
Sanlu milk formula passed the 1100 safety verifications
(the formula affected millions of children in China),
only selectively reporting on social conflict incidents,
and playing down or not reporting at all
on major riots or large scale conflicts.

Li Heping: “Now that the internet is so convenient,
people can get information through social sources,
they don’t need to watch TV, so the influence of CCTV is
decreasing. If it becomes good, then people will welcome it.
If it gets worse, that doesn’t matter much
because it’s no longer important.”

Long Minfei’s blog article mentioned that, CCTV’s programs
are for the 1.3 billion citizens, so it should ask for their views.
Long believes, losing people’s trust will destroy CCTV itself.
If CCTV continues to act without listening to the public,
then it will definitely create a gap between itself
and the general public.
