URGENT ALERT: Gao Yu Beijing Senior Reporter Is Missing

Since April 24, Beijing senior reporter Gao Yu has been missing.
On April 27, friends issued on-line search notice saying,
“Gao Yu has disappeared for unknown reasons."
It has attracted the attention of international media and human
rights groups’
Our reporter had called Gao Yu at 9am of April 24 right before
she went out.
Most likely, our reporter was the last one to have contacted her
before she went missing.

Gao Yu was absent from an April 26 meeting in Beijing.
Since then, she is no where to be found, not at home,
nor on the social media websites.

Wang Jiangsong, Beijing scholar: “She has been missing for
about eight days.
Even her only son was not reachable.
Don’t know exactly what type of crimes she may have
committed."

Gao Yu was believed to have been missing between April 24
and 26.
Several activists forwarded the search notice on Twitter saying
that Gao Yu went missing on Thursday (the 24th).
Her immediate family member’s cell phone was also powered
off.

Wang Debang, Beijing democracy activist: “We can’t determine
the exact time of her missing, it might be 23 or 24.
Her skype was still online on April 25 and 26.
We can leave her messages through skype but can’t reach her.
There is no information regarding her disappearance.
Friends have issued search notices to attract outside attention."

NTD reporter Chen Han contacted Gao Yu at 9am on April 24
and she was about to go out.
It might have been the last time for her to contact anyone
outside before she went missing.

Reporter: “Hello, Gao Yu."
Gao Yu: “I’m so sorry that I have to leave now."
Reporter: “When will you come back?"
Gao Yu: “I will be back late because I have to be out the
whole day. Sorry!"

The Communist regime has started the stability maintenance
crackdown against the June 4th memorial.
Gao Yu is thus suspected of being under house arrest.

Gao Yu had scheduled to participate in the International PEN
activity on May 2 in Hong Kong.
Last May, Gao Yu was detained at Beijing airport on her way
to Hong Kong to participate in the IPEN activity.

Wu Yisan, Hong Kong political commentator: “I think there are
two reasons for her disappearance:
one is to prevent her from participating in the Chinese PEN
literary awards ceremony in Hong Kong;
the other is that the sensitive time—June 4th is approaching"

Deutsche Welle reported that she had exchanged e-mails with DW
on April 23.
She had provided an article to commemorate Hu Yaobang,

“Party vs. Humanity" and promised that part 2 which is related
to the current situation will be provided on Saturday.
Her last logon to Twitter was April 22 with a post about
Jiang Zemin’s appearance in Yang Zhou and photos.

Wang Debang: “It is speculated that her recent article has
probably touched some people’s nerves;
someone also said that it could be because of that picture
of Jiang Zemin."

The latest suppression by forced disappearance by the regime
would be Beijing activist Cao Shunli,
who graduated from Peking University with a Master’s degree
in Law.
After a month of going missing from the public, she was
confirmed to have been detained by the CCP regime and
mysteriously died from serious illness in the jail.

Gao Yu’s going missing has thus caused grave concern to
several international human rights organizations.

Wu Yisan: “The Communist authorities are very severe with
the people like Gao Yu, those who dare to speak up.
It shows that the authorities are very weak since they are not
only afraid of the living, but also of the dying people.
Lin Zhao has been dead for decades. There are still armed
police and plainclothes guards around her grave in Suzhou.
More than 100 people who went to pay tribute
have been arrested.
It is said that there are more than 300 people still being
monitoring now."

Gao Yu is a multi international journalism awards winner for
her persistence in freedom of press and daring to criticize.
She had served at China News Agency before and as deputy chief
editor of Beijing Economics Weekly.
She was twice imprisoned: The first time was in 1989 when
she was secretly abducted and forced to disappear for 450 days
because of the June Fourth Incident;

The second time she was sentenced to six years due to
her article contributed to Hong Kong Ming Pao.
