CIMA Report: Chinese Communist Party Censorship Expanding Abroad

On October 23, the Center for International
Media Assistance issued a report.
It said that the Chinese Communist Party’s
(CCP) censorship is expanding abroad.
The CCP used intimidation, forcing overseas media not to
report on content about China’s democracy and human rights.

This report, entitled “The Long Shadow
of Chinese Censorship", was authored by
Freedom House research analyst Sarah Cook.

The report says, “the Chinese regime’s efforts to influence
reporting by foreign and overseas Chinese news outlets
have intensified and expanded over the past five years."

“These include internationally renowned outlets, such as
the New York Times and Bloomberg, a local newspaper
in Nepal, or a Chinese radio station in Los Angeles."

The report breaks down four ways that the CCP uses
pressure to influence media outlets outside of China.
It uses direct action by Chinese officials, to punish
overseas outlets that fail to heed Chinese restrictions.
It uses economic incentives to induce self-censorship,
as well as indirect pressure applied through proxies
like other foreign governments or advertisers.

Finally, it uses cyber attacks and physical assault.
