China』s Revolutionary Operas Called 『Trash Culture』

The Red Detachment of Women, which was one of only eight
“model operas” permitted during the Cultural Revolution,
was recently performed at the Kennedy Center.

Chinese human rights organizations and democracy activists
in the United States were enraged, particularly those
in Los Angeles, who started an online signature campaign,
calling for a boycott of the Kennedy Center event.
Some scholars called the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) operas,
“trash culture,” suggesting that the CCP is using opera as
an art form to propagate communism.

On Sept. 22-24, the Chinese National Ballet performed
The Red Detachment of Women at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
The infamous opera is one of the “model operas” allowed
during the Cultural Revolution,
thus stirring up disgust among Chinese human rights and
democracy activists in the United States.

Former Peking University Law School lecturer, Wang Tiancheng,
said, “It』s ridiculous for a red show from the CCP』s Cultural
Revolution to perform in the United States,
where freedom of speech is protected.”

Wang Tiancheng: “It』s easy to imagine that political motives
would degrade and distort the artistic character of any work.
I don』t believe that there』s any true artistic value
behind those “model operas.”
The fact that there are some Chinese who feel that
these opera are somehow praiseworthy, reflects the chaotic thinking in the minds of Chinese people.
Talking about the CCP, it always gets stuck in the past,
thus it uses things from its past as the basis of its ongoing propaganda campaign.”

When President Obama hosted Chairman Hu Jintao』s visit to
the White House in January, the theme song for
the anti-American movie about the Korean War battle,
Battle on Shangganling Mountain, appeared on the play list of Chinese pianist, Lang Lang.
This event strongly calls into question the CCP』s attempt to
spread its propaganda in the United States.

Yang Jianli, founder of the Foundation for China in the 21st
Century, said: “If China were ruled by a normal government,
say a democratic one, this (event) would not attract much
attention under normal bilateral relationships.
However, relying on propaganda to keep its power,
the CCP regime is obviously taking advantage of Western
society』s belief in free speech, to sell its own trash culture.”

Yang Jianli, who earned his doctoral degree in economics
from Harvard University, said that if the CCP』s performances
are permitted in the democratic world,
then it follows that any performance or information from
democratic nations should enjoy free access into China.
However, the CCP would never allow this to happen.

Yang Jianli: “In China, there are a lot of restrictions on
the content of performing arts.
For example, the Shen Yun Performance, presented by
the Falun Gong group, is not allowed in China.
Some dramas about the Xinhai Revolution were also
banned in Hong Kong, recently.”

The China Affairs website and the Chinese Social Democratic
Party, along with some other organizations and individuals,
started an online boycott of the CCP』s “model opera”
performances in the United States.

Kang Zhengguo, a Yale University scholar, said that since
the U.S. government and media protect freedom of speech,
it does not try to stop any performance.
However, the fact that the CCP regime suddenly presented
its red show, The Red Detachment of Women,
in the United States, shows a clear comeback of Mao』s
ultra-leftism during the Cultural Revolution.
Overseas Chinese find this totally unacceptable.

Kang Zhengguo: “We all know that the CCP never fully
engaged itself during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
So the CCP』s history, as portrayed by itself after 1949,
is full of holes.
Since the CCP』s true history has been widely revealed,
it』s completely futile to try to resurrect the tide of 『red culture,』 which is based on lies.”

Although the September performance of The Red Detachment
of Women in the United States has ended,
the boycott of The Red Detachment of Women will continue
until the red opera stops touring outside of China.
