美國地質調查所（USGS）測得的規模為7.4，震央位於哥倫比亞西部，震源深度約100公里。哥倫比亞地質調查所則表示，這起地震規模為6.6。
澳大利亞地質調查局（GeoAu）等機構初測數據為7.3級。德國地質學研究中心（GFZ）測得震級為7.4級。哥倫比亞地質調查所則表示，這起地震規模為6.6。
台灣媒體的報導則稱，地震初估規模6.8級，震源深度約98公里。震中距離喬科省（Chocó）一處城鎮約3公里。祕魯、厄瓜多爾、巴拿馬及委內瑞拉等周邊國家，也被列為可能受到影響的區域。

根據德國地球科學研究中心的信息，哥倫比亞10日發生7.5級地震。中國地震台網自動測定的結果是，在哥倫比亞（北緯5.20度，西經76.51度）發生7.2級左右地震。
地震發生時，哥倫比亞首都波哥大（Bogotá）震感明顯，高層建築搖晃，大量民眾與上班族逃到街頭避險。麥德林（Medellín）、卡利（Cali）及曼尼薩萊斯（Manizales）等城市也有強烈震感。遠至巴拿馬首都巴拿馬城（距震中約583公里）也通報有輕微震感。
網上熱傳大量視頻顯示，地震災區衆多建築坍塌。目前地震傷亡情況不明。
