Google Blocked in China to Lower CCP’s “Meeting” Tension

The 18th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) just began and is expected to last about a week. Media reported that Google asserts its search engine and other web services in China have been blocked in large areas.

Associated Press (AP) said that the cut off started from 5 pm on November 9, Beijing time. Some of China’s netizens confirmed failure in unblocking CCP’s web censorship. And the Chinese keyword of “the 18th Party Congress” has been filtered on China’s search engine.

The BBC has reported that Google’s Transparency Report showed a sharp drop in web traffic from November 9. Google services in China became inaccessible, said the BBC. GreatFire.org, Chinese web-censorship monitoring group, affirmed the news in a blog last Friday. Google’s search engine, email, and other internet services were all cut off in China.

The AP stated that “at a politically sensitive time”, “restricting access to Google’s search engine might make it more difficult for people in China to find information about the candidates vying to steer the ruling party.”

Li Yuanlong, former Guizhou Party newspaper journalist, says that anti-censorship software recently did not work.

Li Yuanlong: “Neither Freegate nor UltraSurf proxy can work. Apparently, the CCP has blocked the web for the 18th Party Congress. This meeting has actually put the regime under great tension. It fears social turmoil could occur at this critical moment."

Deutsche Welle reported that this was an “internet paralysis” on the largest scale ever in China. Meanwhile, anti-censorship proxies have reportedly been

under continuous attack in the past few days. The CCP authorities have made unprecedented web censorship. However, it “actively and positively” touts the worth of the internet. CCP official media’s headline hyped that this is the first Party Congress held in the internet era.

Fang Hong, former Chongqing Forestry Bureau official, was imprisoned for mocking Bo Xilai. Fang says his Freegate proxy still functions, but Google services are blocked. Woso.cn, a Chinese search engine, shows “0」 result for

search term “the 18th Party Congress” in Chinese.

Fang Hong: “It alleged it holds a victorious and united congress. But average citizens call it an assembly taking to evil ways. Ridiculing posts have flooded Weibo (micro-blog), saying that countries of the entire world are ‘taking to evil ways’, except China and North Korea, both are keeping’on the right track’.”

The CCP authorities have suffered a streak of severe setbacks in this year.

The issues have ranged from Wang Lijun’s fleeing into the US consulate, to the Bo Xilai couple’s murder scandals. Plus economic slowdown and frequent nationwide mass protests. In facing the tottering CCP reign, Xi Jinping has taken over the power from Hu Jintao.

Li Yuanlong: “I think it is a tragedy for the CCP. In the past era when they held underground meetings, they just feared the then-Chinese government. Now after decades, they still fear, the Chinese people, when holding meetings.

All the time they are nervous in holding their meetings, from the very beginning in the past up until today. I think their meeting will end nervously today, too.”

On November 6, the Deutsche Presse Agentur reported on a general view held by China’s growing middle class. They speculate that the CCP ruling will end

during Xi Jinping’s decade-long tenure.
