US Officials Open Microblogs: Who Will They Embarrass?

Chinese state media recently published articles,
asking US Ambassador Gary Locke, to declare his assets.
Chinese netizens found online that Gary Locke’s personal
assets were declared two years ago.
Recently, 14 US officials wanted to open Sina microblogs
in China, and were followed by fans immediately.
Chinese netizens said that the Gary Locke microblog has
made the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) feel shameful.
Many of the US officials’ microblogs will cause greater
embarrassment.

On May 10, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman and
Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle, opened approved Sina microblogs.
To date, at least 14 US officials have opened Sina microblogs
in mainland China.

Liu Yinquan, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party
of China commented.
Liu felt that through western officials, Chinese people can
learn more about western culture and the global movement.

Liu Yinquan: “These microblogs will promote freedom
of press, speech and even democracy in mainland China.
They will help Chinese people learn more about western
culture, and even the global movement.”

Recently, US Ambassador Gary Locke was attacked
by Chinese state-controlled media.
This surrounded Locke’s assistance of blind activist
Chen Guangcheng in the US embassy, and his visa to the US.

Beijing Youth Daily recently criticized Gary Locke.

It said that he was judging Chinese society with American
values and even pushing these values onto China.
In the afternoon on May 14, Beijing Daily’s official microblog
asked Gary Locke to declare his assets.

The US embassy made a posting on Tencent’s official
microblog on May 17.
“Ambassador Gary Locke, since he entered politics,
declares assets almost every year.
According to last year’s declaration, he has 23 assets,
worth USD 2.25 to 8.12 million, and has a debt of around USD 1 million.
His annual salary is USD 179.7 thousand…

… each of his kids gets an annual education allowance
of USD 30 thousand.”

Liu Yinquan: “From presidents to mayors and councilors,
their properties and tax payments are open to public supervision; open to all voters.”

Liu Yinquan said that Chinese officials’ properties are not
open to the public supervision, and thus corruption prevails.

Since Gary Locke’s first day in Beijing, it has been
a common sight to see him carrying his own backpack.
Later, his drinking coffee and flying economy class
won their favor.

Liu Yinquan: “Chinese and US officials
are so different in their values.
US officials are elected by people, so they
are responsible for them.
They have to be approved by people to be elected,
so they must keep honest.”

Mr. Zheng, an economic counsellor in mainland China,
said many CCP officials take ‘grey’ incomes.
The numbers released are not reliable.

Media has no right to require a US Ambassador to declare
his assets, and it is an evident of crime.
It is a joke of the outside world by doing so in the place
of government.

Mr. Zheng: “As China’s media, you should focus on
people in this country.
Their right to know, to supervise, to criticize,
and whether their rights are respected or not.”

Netizens in China found with ease Gary Locke’s personal
assets declared two years ago.
They sent the information to Beijing Daily immediately
and required “CCP officials to declare their assets as well.”

Some netizens said that the 14 US officials’ microblogs
might still embarrass more people.
