Rising Prices Cause Suffering Amongst the Chinese

The latest data by China’s National Bureau of Statistics show
China’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) again increased 6% in Sept.
Food prices increased over 13.4%.
Many Chinese people complain about inadequate earnings.
Others told NTD that China’s CPI does not reflect the real price.

National Bureau of Statistics released on the 14th revealed that China’s
CPI rose 6.1% in Sept. compared with last year.
Food price averages rose 13.4%; meat and poultry 28.4%,
pork 43.5%, and eggs 14.2%.

Ms. Zhu in Shanghai 100 yuan can buy nothing, 50 (yuan)
is not enough for a bowl of meat.
Now, pork is 17-19 yuan/jin. The cheapest would also be 15.

The Bureau stressed that the Sept. inflation rate dropped by 0.1% from Aug.
However, Ms. Zhu complained over the soaring prices, saying
the Bureau’s statistics cannot reflect ordinary people’s suffering.

Ms. Zhu from Jiangsu Province: “CPI does not reflect real prices,
all of which are soaring. Rice, oil, meat, toilet paper, bread—all their prices are rising.
Pancakes used to be 50 cents each,
now they are 1 Yuan, and size are smaller.
Dumplings used to be 20 Yuan per Kg, now they are 80-100 Yuan per Kg.”

Ms. Chu said around the Oct. 1 festival all prices rose,
and people are undergoing a lot of pressure in life.

Ms. Zhu from Jiangsu Province: “I learned that
coffee prices in Taiwan rose only RMB 1 Yuan,
yet our local price rose even more than that
I can barely live on my RMB 1000-Yuan pension.”

Another Ms. Zhu from Shanghai also lives on pension.
She said the rising prices are beyond her means.

Ms. Zhu from Shanghai: “Even we cannot afford it,
but there are poorer people who earn only 1000 Yuan/month.
How can they feed and educate children?
There are other expenses like medicare. It is really a lot of pressure.”

Chinese authorities introduced policies to stabilize prices,
but Oct.11 statistics show that as of October 9, prices of
agricultural products kept rising for two months.

Mr. Zhang, director of Shanghai Central Cafeteria
Now prices have reached their limit.
Further rising will cause too many complaints from the people.
Cooking oil prices are now RMB12-13 per liter, compared with last year’s RMB 8-9 Yuan.

Mr. Zhang commented that gas prices
in China also keep rising.

Mr. Zhang: “There seems to be intentional regulation of
gas prices, they inflate as soon as there is a trace of falling.
Gas price rises drastically, but only fall by 20 cents. ”

Shanghai resident Gu Xingzhu told local media that although she
does not know what CPI is, the mention of it startles her.
She is afraid that prices will rise again tomorrow morning.
